Disappointing Experience Despite High Hopes

With my go-to Japanese ramen spot temporarily closed, I decided to try something new and found this place through a Google search. The photos looked great, so I thought it was worth a shot—but I left wishing I hadn’t come at all.

The food itself was okay—nothing to rave about—but what really ruined the experience was the front-of-house service. We arrived at 1:30 PM, well before their posted closing time of 3 PM. Yet, we were greeted with: “You only have 30 minutes left.” I asked if it was still okay to order ramen, and he replied, “Up to you, but you only have 30 minutes.” Then, as we sat down, he added, “It will take about 10 minutes to prepare the ramen, so you’ll only have less than 20 minutes to eat.”

It was an unwelcoming and unnecessarily rude interaction, but I chose not to respond to avoid making a scene.

I was dining with my toddler, so I politely asked for a small bowl. But before I could even finish my sentence, he turned his back on me, visibly annoyed or disappointed, and grabbed a bowl. He placed it on the table without saying a word. The dismissive attitude was frustrating and uncalled for.

While waiting for our food, maybe around 1:40pm, another group of customers arrived, including a woman who was still eating when we left—yet he was just as curt and dismissive with them as he was with us. Clearly, this wasn’t a one-off.

Sadly, the cold and unprofessional service overshadowed everything else. I won’t...

Ok folks, this is my first review ever. Arrived at Komatsu with high expectations after browsing the generous reviews only to leave disappointed. While the tempura prawns and squid rings were reasonably decent enough (pretty hard to stuff up deep fried seafood bites right?), have to say the sushi platter had portions the size of muchkin nibbles and tasted meh. Was really looking forward to my ramen after someone wrote in a review "best ramen in Hobart". My tonkatsu ramen broth was bland. The pork scrags were cut from Hobarts skinniest pig and wait for it...the half egg while looking ok turned out to be cold as an eskimo pie due to it obviously being precooked and stored in the fridge then plonked into my ramen direct from the fridge without even attempting to disguise this fact by attempting to preheat it. Boo! Thats just lazy guys. Yet another fake Japanese restaurant not run by Japanese, trying to pretend to be the real deal. I have eaten ramen in Japan and it tastes a hell of alot better than this. On a positive note though...the eel dragon roll was yum and the staff...

I celebrated my birthday at Komatsu Japanese Cuisine, and it was truly an unforgettable experience! From the moment we stepped inside, the warm and welcoming atmosphere made us feel right at home. The food was authentic and delicious—we enjoyed the freshest Tasmanian salmon! We ordered the Dragon Roll, which was beautifully presented and bursting with fresh flavors, the rich and savory ramen, and the perfectly crispy fried squid (Fry Ika). Every dish tasted just like the traditional Japanese cuisine I've enjoyed in Japan. What made the evening truly special was the attentive and thoughtful service from the staff. They not only ensured we had a perfect dining experience but also went the extra mile to make my birthday celebration even more memorable. If you're looking for authentic Japanese flavors and exceptional service, Komatsu is absolutely the place to be. I'll definitely be back—thank you to Jasper and the entire team for such a wonderful evening! Highly...

Recently dying to Ramen in Hobart. Had a few looks around and decided to shoot a try in Komatsu place. The entrance feels like walking into anyone’s houses, kinda odd but accepted. Staff are super friendly and helpful. Decoration is average and normal. The Tonkotsu ramen is ok, ramen noodles may not be fresh, Charsiu pork is flavourful, egg is perfect and runny, broth tasted ok but didn’t reach a required depth of flavour. The spicy ramen is ok as well but the chilli oil is not authentic Japanese cuisine as I could taste Szechuan pepper in the chilli oil. Comparing to what I ate in Japan, this is far out but I totally understand this is Hobart. It is hard to get the ingredients for the perfect ramen. Would consider come back.
