Upon entering my mother and I were taken to our booked table which was only half set. We were left with menus once the table had been set and ordered drinks and food at the same time. The menu was detailed well however it could be laid out better. I was looking for entree options but they were mixed in with the mains, so a bit hard to distinguish. My mother and I opted for mains featuring goat. I enjoyed the documentary that was playing on the TV relating to Annapurna and the base camp. I gained a reasonable insight into the Nepalese experience and their culture. I do feel the space could be used better and more Nepalese culture could be injected into the environment. My drink came about ten minutes before my mothers (I had to prompt them to find out where hers was). My mother received her meal about 5-8 minutes before I received mine. My mothers meal was served on a tin dish which reminded me of a cafeteria but I expect this is how food is served in Nepalese culture. She had a handful of bite sized pieces of goat. They were quite tough but I also expect this is normal as they were not slow cooked. It was served with rice puffs and two dipping sauces. My mother is not big on spice so the heat from the sauces was a bit much for her. I was served goat on metal skewers suspended from a hook with a plate beneath that held some dipping sauce, rice puffs and crispy noodle (not sure on correct name). I do wish I had opted for a different meal as I could have stomached some cooked rice or noodles - something more substantial. I ended up eating a third of my mothers meal. The gentleman who served me whilst I paid was talkative and engaging. I would like to give the place another chance as the menu is quite extensive and I am sure there is a meal I would enjoy more. I did however note that they did not serve any red wine which was...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of dining at The Chowk, and it was an experience worth sharing. From the moment I walked in, the welcoming ambiance and the rich, authentic decor set the stage for what turned out to be an extraordinary meal.
The menu at The Chowk is a delightful exploration of traditional and contemporary flavors. Every dish is crafted with precision, showcasing the best of local and seasonal ingredients. I started with their signature appetizer, the Meat Platter, which was an exquisite assortment of perfectly spiced and tender meats and vegetables, cooked to perfection.
For the main course, I chose the Butter Chicken, which was an absolute masterpiece. The chicken was succulent, and the creamy, aromatic gravy was a symphony of flavors. My dining companion opted for the Paneer Tikka Masala, which was equally impressive, with the paneer being incredibly soft and the sauce rich and flavorful.
The service at The Chowk was impeccable. The staff was attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely enthusiastic about the food they were serving. They made excellent recommendations and ensured that our dining experience was nothing short of perfect.
To end the meal on a sweet note, we indulged in the Gulab Jamun. It was a heavenly conclusion to our dinner, with the perfect balance of sweetness and texture.
Overall, The Chowk exceeded all my expectations. It’s a restaurant that not only serves outstanding food but also provides a warm and inviting atmosphere. Whether you’re looking for a place to celebrate a special occasion or simply want to enjoy a remarkable meal, The Chowk is the place to be. Highly...
Read moreWe saw the sign for "Australia's First Nepalese Pub" on the way in fron the airport and knew we would have to try it out. We were not disappointed.
We arrived for a mid afternoon boozy grazing session and were greeted with stellar views of the city from comfortable leather-cushioned boothes (spinable prayer wheels included). The gentle Nepalese music and general warmth of the interior really helped us relax into ourselves.
I saw the list of Nepalese beers and was determined to try at least one of each brand, my favourite being the 8% Mustang Strong that really packed a punch. My partner got the delectable makhamali cocktail (twice!), which I would rate as the tastiest cocktail I've ever had (and I've had a few). It paired perfectly with the makhamalia rasmalia, but we also treated ourselves to a lal mohan while we slowly got more pickled and the afternoon wore on.
The staff here were beyond fantastic, with the gentleman running the bar taking the time to speak with us on several occasions about drink/food choices and even the establishment of the pub. "Chowk" is the Nepalese equivalent of a junction or intersection in the road where people often gather to eat and drink together.
I would highly recommend checking out the Chowk if you are in Hobart, as it's unique atmosphere and tasty desserts/drinks should...
