Eight Ounce Cafe: A Cozy Retreat With Room for Improvement
Nestled in Springwood, Eight Ounce Cafe offers a cozy, open-air setting that feels inviting yet can quickly become chaotic due to its popularity. Upon arrival, the process for seating was rather confusing. Seeing a long queue at the cashier, we naturally assumed we were supposed to join in to place an order. However, after waiting for a while, we were informed that there was actually a waiting list for tables. The lack of clear signage or direction created unnecessary frustration—something that could easily be resolved with a simple notification at the entrance. After leaving our name with the waiter, we waited 25 minutes for a table.
Once seated, we returned to the queue to place our order, only to overhear another customer having their order canceled due to not having been seated yet—a sign of the café's somewhat disorganized system. This lack of structure marred an otherwise pleasant atmosphere. It would be beneficial for the café to streamline its process with clearer instructions, either via signage or through a better-managed waiting list.
As for the food, the quality was mostly satisfying. Though it took around 30 minutes for our coffee to arrive, it was sadly disappointing—burnt, despite their use of Ona coffee beans, which usually promise a much better experience. On the other hand, the hojicha latte was a delightful treat, especially with the addition of ice cream. The unagi chazuke stood out as a flavorful dish, and the prawn katsu sandwich was well-executed, hitting the right notes of texture and taste. The chicken chazuke was also a highlight, with the chicken cooked to perfection—succulent and tender, making the dish incredibly satisfying.
The star of the menu, however, was the sesame pot plant dessert—creative, well-balanced, and utterly delightful, it was the redeeming feature of the meal and left a lasting impression. Despite these high points, the overall experience was marred by the inefficient system and the long wait times. With only a handful of staff trying to manage a bustling crowd, the café seemed overwhelmed, and it showed.
In conclusion, Eight Ounce Cafe has great potential, with a few standout dishes and a cozy atmosphere, but it desperately needs to improve its ordering and seating system. For those willing to brave the chaos, it can be worth a visit—particularly for the dessert and chazuke. However, until the system is refined, I’d suggest waiting until the hype dies down, or arriving early to avoid the...
Read more** very long wait times during peak hours and holidays!!
I’ve dined here three times now and the previous two times I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, but recently I came here and had to provide feedback.
Some wait times during peak and on a Saturday and school holiday was to be expected but we waited almost 2 hours altogether for a table and for food - just to eat for 15 mins because we were starving at that point. It’s understandable that it’s busy but it’s also disappointing to wait so long and then have some menu items that we were looking forward to unavailable from their already small existing menu - at 12 pm - which is only halfway through their opening hours. This includes their dessert items and chashu tamago dish (which is one of three non seafood dishes).
Food: Is excellent! The experience is lovely and the food is very yummy and high quality. I recommend their unagi and chashu dishes. Their desserts are also lovely and balanced - not too sweet. Their matcha is also very high quality and bright (as you can see in the pictures). It was a bit disappointing to receive them in plastic takeaway cups when dining in when we last visited however.
Service: It is understandable that it is very busy, however we weren’t greeted on entry. I was a bit confused about where to go as there are just signs saying to check in at the window, which is where people also line up to order. I feel as though the staff should also inform customers about expected wait times (estimation) without being asked and also be transparent that menu items are sold out prior to sitting down and then lining up to order. I think staff can be a bit more welcoming to almost accomodate for the experience unfortunately.
Atmosphere: The cafe is cozy and small - unfortunately too small to fit everyone that is waiting so groups of people just loiter around. Because it was also busy, people were standing up and sitting on the floor while dining in. However, during not busy times, it is a lovely place to relax...
Read moreShared from a friend, this place has been on my list to try since it was opened!
When we arrived, we had to wait for about half an hour with 5 groups of people waiting in front of us in the queue. The queueing system allows you to leave your contact no. and they will notify you when it’s your turn.
Service was quick and the staffs were really nice and accommodating. They are pet-friendly as well so we were able to dine in with our kitten in a bag carrier.
Must try:
Iced Pistachio Matcha Latte - the combo itself already sounds enticing enough to try. The matcha and pistachio taste were so distinctive and complements each other well without one overpowering the other! If you don’t mind a nutty flavour to your matcha, try this!
Unagi Chazuke - Underneath the unagi was a nicely rolled up furikake rice ball with toasted brown rice sprinkled on its sides. The unagi was well seasoned and paired well with the subtle taste of the genmai dashi. Personally, I find the pricing for this dish very reasonable for the portion!
Matcha Ice-cream - They also serve ice-cream scoops if you want dessert after the meal. The single scoop was generous and I love that the taste of matcha is prominent (not too sweet as well, iykyk)!
I would definitely be back to try the other options...
