I recently had the displeasure of visiting Punjabi House, courtesy of a friend’s recommendation (note to self: find better friends) Contrary to the tasteful décor, the food was tasteless and shameful.
We began with ras malai, or so the menu claimed. It was in fact rasgulla dressed up and passed off as ras malai. The balls were hard, as though they had been sitting around for days, and the milky syrup was just...well... fine. A hard pass 3/10.
Next came the mango lassi. It wasn’t terrible, but it certainly wasn’t memorable. The mango flavour was weak, but look you can't go wrong with a mango lassi 7.5/10.
Craving a taste of home and feeling overwhelmed by options, we tried the pani puri. The moment the puri's came out I knew my ancestors were cursing at me from the heavens The puris contained two miniature potato cubes, tasted of stale oil, and had none of the joy that pani puri from back home provides. The pani itself was fine, but the dish as a whole was a letdown 5/10.
Then came the “papdi chaat,” a dish so unrecognizable we had to flag down the waitress to ask if they had brought us the wrong order. What arrived was a bowl of crackers drowning in yogurt with a drizzle of tamarind sauce; no chutney, no pomegranate, no onions, no sev. I understand that in Australia you might tone down certain spices for a Western palate, but our cuisine deserves to be represented in all its glory, not stripped of all its flavour. 2/10.
The single saving grace was the malai chicken tikka. It was beautifully cooked, tender, and full of flavour, truly a diamond in the rough. The green chutney paired beautifully with the chicken and this dish is a definite must try. 10/10
For main, we ordered aloo paratha and chole bhature. The chole bhature was average, but the chole lacked seasoning and depth, and they didn’t even bother to serve it with proper achar. When we asked the waiter for achar she pointed to the green paste on the plate, if that was achar then I am Salman Khan. The minty paste was subpar and added nothing to the overall dish. Come on guys If you’re going to offer a dish, serve it properly please. 6.5/10
The aloo paratha was also average but entirely forgettable. If I’d brought my desi mother here, I would have received a swift chappal to the face. 4/10
As if all that weren’t enough, the entire group ended up with food poisoning, we were up all night and had to cancel our plans for the next day. I'm genuinely convinced it really was that ancestral curse for daring to eat at Punjabi House.
To give credit where credit is due, the décor was genuinely beautiful. It transported me back to the streets of India, and the witty posters scattered around the place accentuated the whimsy of the venue. And our server, Khushi, she was a true bright spot; warm, attentive, and remarkably patient despite our endless requests and a packed house. Her service and humour was the highlight of the lunch. However the other shorter woman host was at often times cold and dismissive.
Overall, Punjabi House is a hard skip unless your idea of a good time is an intimate, hours-long staring contest with your toilet walls while questioning every life choice you’ve ever made. Honestly, you’re better off buying the ingredients yourself and...
Read moreThis place even don’t deserve any single star unfortunately I have to give them 1 star just to post my review 0 star for service and aggressive behaviour of that girl on counter, this was my third time there and I got same arrogant girl on counter, Even I gave my feedback to the manager there but no one care about that That’s why I have to post this today so people can read something before waste there money
Booked table online 30 mins ago, when I went there the girl on counter was so rude and unprofessional, and then after wait for 30 mins I ask again to take my order and after placed my order I wait 45 mins and even I haven’t got single item on my table, after 50 mins I went again on counter to ask how long will take , girl on counter said just 1 min and then again I wait 20 mins, seriously , food was just Amritsari kulacha and garlic naan, so I think they should trained the staff properly first of all that how to talk with customers and they they should definitely let the customer know if they r bsy that will take bit longer, they might need to offer some drink to customers while they r waiting, never prefer to go their again, it was my third time there and same thing happened and I always gave them feedback at the end but no one care about that, it means they don’t care about customers feedback, we can eat food at home as well, but we r dining outside in restaurant it means we want really good service otherwise we eat everyday at home,, that’s all

Read moreDear Manager I am writing to formally express my disappointment with the customer service I received at your establishment on Saturday at approximately 1:49 PM today. I visited the store to purchase Jalebis for a friend and interacted with a female staff member at the counter. Upon enquiring about the availability of the small box, the staff member responded only by nodding and gesturing rather than providing verbal communication. When I requested the small box again, she merely shook her head. It was only after I mentioned that I had previously received a small box that she informed me it was out of stock. This lack of clear and timely communication caused unnecessary confusion and delay, especially with other customers waiting in line. Furthermore, I found the overall demeanor of the staff member to be discourteous and unwelcoming — no greeting was offered, nor was there any attempt to engage politely. As I was leaving in a hurry to catch a train, she called me back to inform me that my card had declined. While I appreciate that she needed to communicate this, her tone and the manner in which she said “Have a good day” afterwards felt sarcastic and mocking, leaving me feeling embarrassed and humiliated. I hope this matter will be taken seriously and addressed appropriately to ensure a more respectful and professional experience for customers in the...
