Benjys Karaoke Bar — Restaurant in Melbourne

My partner, friends, and I had an incredible experience this weekend at Benjy's. We went there to celebrate my partner's birthday and the owners, Tim and Jazz, made every possible effort to ensure that we had a great time.

Tim quickly responded to all of my emails asking questions about bringing balloons, serving cake, when we should arrive, etc and was always kind and considerate in his responses. He kept saying they would "make a fuss" for my partner, and they certainly did!! They led the room in singing happy birthday, they lit the candles and brought out the cake to her, they gave her a birthday shot on the house, and checked in throughout the night to make sure we were all having a good time. My partner forgot to wear her "Birthday Girl" badge and Tim actually went out and bought one for her! He even looked up how to say "happy birthday" in her native language so he could write it on the projector. I genuinely don't know anywhere else you could expect that level of care.

We stayed literally from open to close because we were having so much fun. I could not recommend Benjy's more highly, and I wish I could give more than 5 stars! They really do care about your experience and they just want to share their love and joy with everyone. They also recently hired door security, which was great and helped everyone feel more safe throughout the night. I can't wait...

Went in for 3 drinks, and signed up to sing a song. The guy taking ownership of the bar obviously takes a lot of pride in his job. He waits out front to “vet” people for entry. Fair enough. So he was on break when I arrived, I had to wait out front of a clearly 25% full venue for 15 minutes for him to return to his duties. Sober. This is fine. A little unorganised and uninviting. But fine. I request a song on entry, then after my three drinks and being physically abused by one of the” importantly vetted” patrons (young person dancing and repeatedly slapping me and my friend in the face) we leave. I go to a bar across the road, still very keen to sing my requested song. The guy out front says it’s 40 mins away. I say thank you and set a timer. I return 35 mins later to him saying “to be honest, you haven’t been supporting the bar enough” the nerve, not Melbourne hospitality and quite rude and assumptious. Right. Thanks for creating such a “safe” environment. This is a phoney bar. I appreciate anyone who has had fun here. Because I’m sure with minimal interaction with him, it’s possible. But the man running it is obviously not interested in people enjoying themselves expressing on a mic....

Benjys is fantastic!!!

This place is run by a beautiful group of staff and owners who really put their heart and passion into this place!! One of the owners, Tim, greeted our group and gifted me a little something so thoughtful when he found out we were here to celebrate my birthday. We all had a blast and sang our hearts out! We will definitely be back!

They have a selection of 55k songs you can nominate and they get queued with the other requests. When it's your turn you go on stage, grab the mic and go! You'll find is that regardless of who is holding the mic, EVERYONE sings along and it's one big karaoke party!

Things to note: Outdoor courtyard in the back with some seating. People smoke there too We attended in April 2021 on a Friday night, they were not taking bookings. We arrived at 9:30pm with a group of 8, got in easy with no issues. They were busy but not packed They have props!
