From the moment I walked in, there was something missing. Warmth, friendliness? My initial reaction upon being greeted at the front door was that the cafe was dismal. I was doing takeaway, but the cafe seating area did look inviting (and the reason why I gave 3 stars to the atmosphere though I am not sure if it is deserved.)
The pastries looked ok but some looked...anemic. I ordered some cookies anyway because you never know. I can confirm it was a mistake. The gingerbread were bendy and have the wrong texture (whether you are going for chewy or cripsy, they have the wrong texture.) Almost like they were cooked on the outside but not the inside. The chocolate chips are baked, but lacking in colour, and frankly, flavour.
Coffee was way too hot, and was just ok. I think the espresso in my flat white was overextracted because it had an astringent aftertaste (even with the milk.) Compared to the coffee places just in this area, I think Bentwood needs to step up their barrista game.
Service felt awkward (and based on the interactions I witnessed, I am fairly certain several other patrons felt the same way.) That's fine for me actually, if everything else wasn't somehow off.
The wait area for takeaway is right at the door. On my way out, the door has a handle that needs to be turned with a lot of strength, something you can't do with two very hot coffees in your hands. If you know there is a problem with your door (as your sign on the door handle suggests,) just maybe, when you hand someone two hot coffees, offer to open the door or a coffee tray to help free up a hand? Another patron saw my struggle and very kindly helped me close the door because that was going to be another gymnastic endeavour once I had the door open. I think it took me well over 3 minutes to get the door initially open to leave.
I'm sorry but I do not recommend this place, and I feel like I...

We had:
Eggs Benny, that comes with pulled braised beef brisket, chipotle hollandaise, poached eggs, sweet potato fries, chives, cornbread waffles. All the perfectly cooked and picked ingredients to make this a sensational yet a classic Benedict’s dish with lots and lots of amazing flavours. Hence you definitely need to must try, that beef brisket is the key to this entire dish being so tempting and addictive.
Prawn and Kimchi Omelette, need a bit of spiciness this winter, then definitely try this, a beautiful combination of kimchi braised prawns inside an omelette with kewpie Mayo, beans sprouts, Asian salad, coriander, chilli and fried shallots, a very Asian take of this lovely breakfast/brunch dish. Loved it, especially because kimchi makes everything so flavourful.
Churro waffles, served with hot cocoa fudge sauce, vanilla icecream, salted caramel and strawberries, a very refreshing and delicious sweet breakfast/brunch dish that’s kids gonna love it because of all the fresh ingredients in it and the churro waffles are super crisp and fluffy from the inside.
Mango smoothie and peanut butter smoothie, both were equally refreshing and very filling.
Matcha latte, so satisfying to drink, must try for matcha lovers.
The prices might be slightly steep but then again you only expect to get quality and premium ingredients in your food. Also not to mention, the serving sizes are quite generous considering the price. And the service is friendly and prompt and the team of staff are all very cheerful, welcoming and helpful in nature.
So why not spend your Saturday morning @bentwoodfitzroy and have a sumptuous brunch or brekkie over comforting drinks/coffee/cocktails...
Read moreBentwood Cafe in Fitzroy has been a staple in our lives for many years, and for good reason. This charming cafe has consistently served up delicious food and exceptional coffee, making it a regular haunt for us. Our recent visit was no exception, with two standout dishes that left us wanting more.
First up, the Classic Smashed Avocado was a masterclass in simplicity. Fresh, creamy avocado was perfectly balanced with a squeeze of lemon and a sprinkle of red pepper flakes, all atop toasted sourdough bread. It’s a dish we’ve had many times before, but Bentwood’s execution is always spot on.
Next, the Anglaise-soaked Sourdough French Toast was a sweet indulgence. Thick slices of sourdough were soaked in a rich, creamy anglaise sauce and grilled to perfection, resulting in a crispy exterior and fluffy interior. It was pure bliss!
And let’s not forget the coffee - always a highlight at Bentwood. Whether you prefer a strong flat white or a rich cappuccino, the team here knows their stuff.
But what really sets Bentwood apart is its gorgeous space. With its high ceilings, natural light, and stylish decor, it’s the perfect spot to catch up with friends or enjoy a quiet moment to yourself. And did you know it’s also available to hire for private functions? Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, hens, baby shower or corporate event, Bentwood’s versatile space can accommodate your needs.
In short, Bentwood Cafe is a Fitzroy institution that never disappoints. With its consistently great food, excellent coffee, and beautiful space, it’s a must-visit for anyone in the area. We can’t wait to go back!
