Maedaya is one of the authentic Japanese restaurants served good quality food with decent price and located not far from Melbourne CBD. The restaurant has spacious place inside, outdoor and upstairs, they do have a typical Japanese bar table. When you pick this spot, you're able to enjoy your food and the view when the Chef is grilling and preparing the food; but be ready to have your clothes smelly;
The customer service was friendly, nice and quite attentive. We went with group of Japanese food lover friends. On that day we decided to go to Maedaya because we're intrigued to find out due to the good rating from Zomato.
Note: booking is recommended because it would be very busy on weekday dinner time and weekend. Anyway, we ordered: Tempura Sushi Salmon (salmon, cucumber & seafood lobstar salad sushi cooked using the tempura style) for $8.00. Aburi Double Salmon Roll (torched & seared salmon sushi filled with cucumber, mayonnaise and teriyaki sauce) for $16.80. The presentation of the sushi was great; The overall taste of both tempura sushi salmon and salmon roll were slightly above average. Surely, it wasn't the best sushi we've every tried compared to other Japanese authentic restaurant in CBD for the same value.
Simmered Chicken Cutlet with egg (Japanese omellete style crumbed cutlet with sweet soy sauce) for $9.50. The chicken cutlet was well deep fried and had good presentation. The taste was balance and well seasoned; Unfortunately, it was little bit soggy when served because it's too watery. We would expect something more crunchy in this dish.
2 sets of Double Yakitori (charcoal grilled chicken thigh) for $5.20/each. Claimed to be the best seller dish, yeah!! it's absolutely great dish. Very recommended to order this one. The yakitori was nicely grilled and had good texture; The thigh chicken was also tender and well seasoned. It was a great value for this decent food.
2 sets of Maedaya Sumiyaki (skewers set of tsukune chicken balls, yakitori chicken thigh, chilli inari curd, gyu kushi beef) for $17.50/each. We loved the tsukune chicken balls and yakitori chicken thigh. The chilli inari curd had a very average taste and gyu kushi beef wasn't served warm which was quite disappointed. The beef was pretty bland and tough. The tsukune chicken balls and yakitori chicken thigh had perfect taste and well seasoned. We'd prefer to order these two only for two sets rather than having inary curd and gyu kushi beef.
Double Kirim Beer for $13.20. Fried rice for $4.80. Steam rice for $2.00.
Few things to note from our experience, it was oddly enough that the sushi didn't come first in our order. The steam and simmered chicken cutlet came first instead. We had to wait for another 10-15 min to wait until the double salmon roll came and other dishes.
Overall, we still had a good time while having dinner here and the next time we come back we'll try other dishes. You'll be expecting to spend between $27.50 - $35.00 to indulge your tummy!

Read moreCan't believe it has taken me so long to visit this place. The dishes are cooked really well and a favourite of the night was the sashimi (it was a bloody bargain!), gyoza, okinomiyaki and the karage. The guy working the kitchen is super friendly and took our order since we got in a little early. I'd be super keen to sit up at the bar next time and grab one of their bowls and slurp down one of their tasty Japanese beers and just imagine I am back in the small alleys of Tokyo.
The shop that they have attached to it is also great. Reminiscent of a Japanese convenient store with a whole bunch snacks and sweet treats. They have a pretty noice selection of japanese booze ranging from drinks you could grab to take to a house party where everyone is way cooler than you but you somehow fit in since you have some obscure japanese can of saki, to some classy bottles of sake.
The best part is I scored myself a bag of 60...SIXTY pork gyozas for 20 Bucks; eat your bloody hat! Cooked them last night and they were delightful.
You bloody bet I'm going back especially when I spent 80 bucks for dinner between two, with drinks also!
I am frothing at my lips as I type up this review; can't wait to get back in there and eat myself stupid and drink myself to a splendid stupor. I'll see you guys there Woooohooooo! I'll take one of...
Read moreWe have been there many times before the owner was changed. We went for the first time after the owner were changed. We booked for table and they booked us for bar table it was our mistake as well we didn’t mention we had a 2 years old. I was bit upset they booked us for those table and they mention they don’t have table for 3 as all table were booked and 4 or many people. It was our anniversary dinner and it was ruined already. So they gave us table next to door but they were bit rude with us may be because I was upset in the beginning with them for booking bar table for us. It took a while for them to give us child Chile and had to request 2 different waiters. Food was good but we did missed old menus. Waiters service was really cold. 3 stars...
