Here's my review of Hencho En Mexico in Thornbury, where my partner and I decided to indulge our cravings for Mexican cuisine on a Friday night.
Upon arrival, the outdoor seating area was bustling, giving the impression that the restaurant was packed. However, we quickly discovered plenty of inviting seats inside waiting for us. A friendly waitress greeted us warmly and guided us to our table.
As we settled in, our eyes were drawn to the menu, and we couldn't resist ordering the taquitos, fried chicken tacos, and a chicken burrito, complemented by refreshing Jarritos Lime and Virgin Pina Colada drinks.
First off, the drinks were a feast for the eyes! The Jarritos Lime came with a wedge of lime, while the Virgin Pina Colada was artfully presented, setting the stage for what was to come.
However, I had a little hiccup during our visit. A year after having lung surgery due to cancer, I found myself sensitive to the smoke coming from a few guests near the entrance. But the staff couldn’t have been more accommodating; they helped us move back to a more comfortable spot in the restaurant.
Now, onto the food! The taquitos were enjoyable, though slightly on the drier side due to a thicker-than-expected shell. Thankfully, they were served with delicious house-made guacamole that was perfectly seasoned and added a nice touch.
The chicken burrito was good, but the flavours blended so thoroughly that I had trouble identifying the individual components. This isn’t a knock on the restaurant; it's just a personal preference for flavours that I can see.
Regarding spice levels, I found the medium heat to be just right. It’s also worth mentioning that each table is equipped with Tabasco sauce, allowing you to customise the spice to your taste if you share dishes.
Now to the star of the meal: the fried chicken tacos! They were a triumph, balancing moreish flavours. I’d order them again and can't wait to explore the other fillings on my next visit. Overall, it was an...
Read moreI went for dinner here last night with friends and ordered the classic burrito. I’ve been to 2 other sites of this restaurant and always enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. However, I’m really disappointed and upset to say that after taking a bite into my burrito my gum was deeply stabbed by a wooden splinter! This really hurt and took me a good minute to remove. I decided to speak up and say something to the staff and tried to be nice about it. I told the waitress about what happened and she just said “oh sorry” and then went to the back to get another staff member who asked me what happened and I explained the situation to which he just said “oh sorry” again and then walked off. I then wasn’t spoken to or addressed again until we decided to go up and pay. The staff member asked me if I was okay and I said obviously not and then he proceeded to say “do you want something?” Like are you kidding?! The fact that they didn’t immediately offer any kind of compensation and ignored the situation really upset me. Of course I wanted something! I said a discount would be nice and I was only offered $10 off. The whole situation was handled by all staff members horrendously and I think I deserved to have been treated a lot better :( I’ve looked at many other 1 star reviews for this particular restaurant and also noticed that all responses to negative reviews are just copied and pasted and not even personalised to the customer and the situation and I am NOT impressed! So don’t...
Read moreYeah so everything was going just fine when we got there, ordered some fish and beef tacos along with a few other bits. The tacos came out but we received chicken instead of fish, simple mistake in a busy restaurant, so we gingerly informed the waitress whom took our order that we received the wrong order, naively thinking we might receive what we ordered without a fuss. I regret to inform you, there was a fuss. Things got real weird real quick. The waitress seemed to take this to heart, like a personal insult, doubling down and insisting "That's what you ordered! You ordered chicken!", steadfastly refusing to replace the tacos with the correct order whilst weirdly peppering us with the question "so everything is fine?" (On reflection it was more of a statement, a power move perhaps?) whilst insinuating my wife was either dishonest or a bit simple. We were flabbergasted. It's almost like this ordering business had some deeper meaning to her, she ambushed us with her staunch stance on the whole exchange and we simply couldn't match the her energy so we just quietly sat still until she lost interest and slithered off. We were flummoxed. I don't really know if the food was any good as we were bewildered by the spectacle we had just endured, this may have been a trauma response of sorts.
The one star of this review belongs to the gentleman working the bar with a nice smile that welcomed us in. He was cool af, thanks dude,...
