Macelleria has brought a new concept of dining to the busy streets of Richmond. The idea behind their steakhouse is that the butcher cooks for you. Upon entering this large and open space, you are greeted with a glass display case filled with a variety of cuts of meat. Beef steaks, lamb, kebabs, sausages and chicken are amongst the choices. You select your meat and a variety of sides, and the chef cooks it to order. What a fab idea, and so mych fun. You can see the quality and freshness of the meat before it's cooked, and although everything is simple, the quality and freshness is fantastic.
We grabbed a window side table and started with some wine. The restaurant is large, with picnic style tables and wall murals of animals and their cuts of meat. It has a fun and relaxed atmosphere, and the staff are super friendly and helpful. Our waitress offered us some suggestions, so we went with the beef rib eye, a pork and fennel sausage and lamb kebab; with a side of chips and salad. There was so much food, and it made the carnivorous husband very happy.
The steak was so thick and juicy, and the red wine jus with it was also amazing. Such a simple concept, but when cooked well, a great steak has amazing flavours. The sausage and kebab were also fantastic, being juicy but not fatty at all. The flavours really shone through, and overall it was a fantastic meal.
Macelleria has touched on a great idea, and with it's fabulous service, top quality meat and fun ambience should definitely bring in the crowds when covid restrictions are lifted. Lucky for me they had chicken & salmon on the menu.
We started with a large plate of sweet potato chips, we thought the plate that came out was a little small but the chips were AAAaaamazingly D - elicious 🤤 ….. funnily enough once finished, the waitress brought out a bigger dish & explained how the first was the wrong size… (we really didn’t care that much) but were very grateful ☺️
For mains, I opted for the salmon which was perfectly cooked👌🏾with a side of greens, (they brought me roast veg instead) I pointed out the mistake & they quickly rectified it. My greens were a little undercooked for my liking & very bland, no seasoning, salt, oils, nothing - just steamed veggies (being Italian this is a big no)
We also tried the duck sausage & the lamb & rosemary sausage, both so tender & tasty = delicious!
My husband had a eye fillet, it was also perfectly cooked, melted in your mouth, so fresh, juicy & tender - exactly how a steak should be, he ordered a side of roast veggies which were nicer & more cooked than mine.
Weirdly, once he had finished his steak (I presume it was the owner) brought out another, bigger piece of steak & said the first one was too small (it really wasn’t) we were really confused but again very grateful & appreciative of his honesty & hospitality.
The service from this guy was second to none, he showed us what real hospitality should look like.
If I could give this place more stars for the customer service alone, I would..
