Our first visit to MJ's and having looked at the menu online, I was looking forward to it. The website says the set menu was $34 FOR two people...which would be reasonable because all the portions were TINY. (eg: taco is width of my palm). We ordered that, a (small) salad bowl ($16), a soft drink and tea. (note: there is another set menu for $55...) Service was average. (Had to ask for plates, and I came downstairs to place my order). The restaurant had NO MILK (no hot chocolates for the kids) - and NO GREEN TEA available. Was shocked when the bill was $94.50. Questioned it, and she said "$34 PER person". When I showed the website - she didn't care. I've never felt the urge to write a negative review until now. It's a tiny restaurant, with tiny portions of food... but a large bill at the end of it. We eat out every week, and I don't mind paying for good food, good service and good atmosphere. Unfortunately, MJs was none of this.
Further to the owner's response.... My two children had eaten earlier, so they were not there for dinner. The palm size tacos were SMALL.... not because of how many people ate them - but because they are TINY. I have never ever seen such teeny tiny tacos. The website has FALSE information as it says $34 FOR TWO PEOPLE - and that should be rectified. Your menu is not clear either... as it does not say "per person" - it just says "minimum 2 ppl" - not cost PER person. $6 for a glass of soft drink and ice is not cheap. And $4.50 was the menu price for the tea... not forgetting - you had NO green tea which was ordered. Don't know where the "discount" is for a glass of soft drink and tea - as they were the prices on the menu. Husband and I didn't drink anything - so nothing to discount there! My complaint is the ADVERTISING that says $34 for two people - and then when we had to pay $68 for it - there is NO WAY I can justify the cost of those tiny portions. In honesty, they didn't...
Read moreMJ's Hideout is the absolute hidden gem of Chelsea. Tucked away next to the old Court House - now the Historical Museum - MJ's is a far cry from the Tex-Mex standard of Nachos Cantina and Montezuma's, offering fresh, exciting fare that will have you coming back time and time again.
Their tacos are small but pack an amazing flavour punch - slow cooked chicken is paired with habanero mayo and crispy chicken skin; pulled pork is dressed with sweet pineapple and light fennel mayo. Burrito bowls, enchiladas and quesadillas are also on the menu, along with salads and sides and the ubiquitous nachos, which will surely satisfy those with a less adventurous palate. The guacamole is to die for.
Besides the food, MJ's has a delightful selection of cocktails (don't be put off the Chelsea Beach cocktail's colour; the mezcal worm salt rim is always worth it) and an impressive array of mezcal and tequila, plus basic spirits, wines, local beers and cider.
With Día de Muertos decor and amazingly friendly staff, MJ's Hideout is a diamond in the rough and a truly welcome addition to the...
Read moreWent for the well talked about Tuesday Taco’s on previous reviews. While the food was really good it took a long time to get there -we waited 30+mins for nachos that we’d expected to enjoy with our drinks. I also had to go up to the bar to order another drink after sitting with an empty glass for 20mins while the two staff sat behind the bar on their phones. I was then told I couldn’t have a margarita as they had run out of lime juice. While these things happen, my wife had been there previously and they had run out of coronas that night. Surely a Mexican restaurant shouldn’t run out of lime or coronas!!! I could understand if it was busy but there were only 2 other tables there and it is less than 150meters from a major supermarket and wouldn’t be hard to duck out to get something as simple as lime juice instead of scrolling on phones. While this place has fantastic potential I will not be raving about it or returning...
