Read moreOh boy! The way I was so skeptical when my friend suggested a cafe that only had 5 star reviews. 🤨 I thought surely they're deleting comments and paying their way up. But the way Tano brought us in as soon as we stepped pass those chain links we were met with an instant European hospitality like no other. 🤗 I then understood how this extra warmth and personal attentiveness stands out in a food scene as fast paced and competitive as Melbourne's.
Tano gave us the run down of his menu and prepared our table. FYI the seating here is limited so best try to beat the lunch time rush if you want to enjoy the view from their second floor.
We came during a quieter time and bit by bit found out more and more about their story. That Tano has started hitting the gym as him and his partner Jess are prepping for their wedding next month! 🔔
And the SANDWICHES themselves 🤤 these fluffy bouncy loaves packed to the brim with various inserts like mortadella, burrata and eggplant has supplied me with a new craving that will surely hit again in a couple weeks time.
Tano explained he didn't want to forgo the unique taste of Puglia. So instead of using cheaper local flour, he imports Italian flour which by nature has a lower gluten content compared to that of the Australian products, leaving you feeling lighter and less bloated.
Anyway tl;dr if you wanny try something other than a typical brunch menu when you visit Melbourne I definitely recommend checking out the delightful focaccia sandwiches...

No 22 is a sandwich cafe located on Flinders St in Melbourne CBD. Their focus is on authentic focaccias, owned and operated by a lovely, Pugliese couple, Tano and Jess. They have a 5-star Google Rating with over 300 reviews, and I can see why! ⭐️
Tano runs the front of house, he goes through the concept and menu with such passion and enthusiasm to every customer that walks through the door. Jess is in the kitchen from the early morning, baking the fresh focaccia from premium flour. She will pop out from time to time to introduce herself and have a chat. These mindful interactions really make an experience. 🥰
There are a whopping 22 focaccias on the menu, along with 3 specials. I did find most of them were very similar and maybe could have been condensed. Their best seller is the Autentica, which features mortadella, straciatella/burrata cheese and pistachios, a combination that is definitely having its moment in 2024. It was creamy, refreshing and textural. Perfect. 🥪
A second favourite was the La Campana, with Pork Sausage and Friarielli, a real tasty, homely IYKYK option. The Queen Special was dreamy, sweeter but limited time due to the availability of figs. If I had to be picky, I would have loved some more of the cold cuts in The Queen and La Valtellinese.
Definitely one to add to your list and worthy of its raving reviews. We will be back...
