✨ Summer Rooftop Dining ✨

Established in 1853, The Duke of Wellington is Melbourne’s oldest licensed pub, serving a variety of satisfying pub meals. It features various seating options, perfect for intimate gatherings or enjoying refreshing views from the rooftop.

We had: 🥩 Chargrilled Lamb Rump $48 🍝 Queensland Prawn & Chorizo Linguini $37 🥧 Lamb Pie $32 🍰 Lemon Curd Tiramisu $12 🍮 Crème Brulee $12

I haven’t visted many pubs for dining and was pleasantly surprised how delicious the meals were.

The Chargrilled Lamp Rump had a robust charred burn flavour with a pink center, complemented by a light celeriac remoulade salad dressed in mustard and a crisp watercress salad.

The serving of linguini was exceptionally generous, cooked al dente and tossed with chili, garlic butter, lemon, olive oil, and herbs. The pangrattato (Italian breadcrumbs) provided an additional layer of texture and the prawns were bouncy and plentiful.

The Lamb Pie was the dish that excited me the most, and it definitely lived up to expectations. The meat was tender, soaked in a rich red wine sauce, all wrapped in a flaky, biscuit-like pastry. The creamy mashed potatoes and peas offered a great contrast in texture, while the gravy enhanced the overall dish.

We ended with a Lemon Curd Tiramisu, a delightful blend of sponge and cream with a zesty kick, and a rich, creamy...

The staff were great—friendly, and welcoming. Unfortunately, the food was underwhelming, especially for the price.

Two of us ordered steaks, both very overcooked (mine was very well done instead of the medium I ordered) and lacking seasoning. The salad was dry with no real dressing, and made up entirely of leaves, no red onion etc, literally just a dry pile of leaves. A good pub salad is the simplest thing in the world. No sauce or gravy was included, which I believe was an oversight. I guess you have to pay extra and order it on the side? For $49 I’m not sure what I paid for…

It wasn’t busy when we dined, so there’s no real excuse for the lack of quality. I’ve eaten here before, and the food was okay but nothing special, so maybe it was an off day or bad luck. We didn’t send anything back, as it was edible—just disappointing. I hate causing a fuss and complaining, but it was that meh that I had to go ask for salt and pepper from the bar.

Would I say don’t eat here? Probably wouldn’t go that far. But the kitchen could use more attention to detail and management could take a proper look at the menu and have an honest conversation with themselves regarding the quality not lining up to...

The service was shocking here last night, the security were watching us watch the footy almost without blinking, the bar staff were rude and I even had to take the drinks off the tray when they arrived. The shorter blonde bartender was the most rude and when cleaning tables she sprayed cleaner on a man too which got him to leave and just had no care about it.

The food and drinks were very very very expensive. Including a 15% surcharge, I paid $19.85 per pint that I was ordering and over $50 per person for dinner. The rump steak didn’t look 350g and was a bit dry, so it was good they had butter on top, but it already had pepper on it which I don’t like and it wasn’t advertised anywhere. I liked that they used The Pass app because I received a few $10 discounts for all the money I was spending, but maybe that’s also why it’s priced higher.

I heard the same songs many times when they were playing music, but it was good that there was a range of sport on TV and the live music with the guitar took requests and created a slightly better feeling to the place.

I won’t...

I love the Duke of Wellington as a local Melburnian. We stop by here quite often since it’s centrally located, making it a short trip to both the MCG for the footy and Flinders Street Station for the train. It’s a great spot to meet up for a beer, with a sports bar downstairs, and also a nice place for dinner, with the restaurant area upstairs. There’s a good variety of food on offer, and when we visited in November with a group of friends, we all got quite into it. The parmas were a great size, and I saw some good looking gnocchi down the table. Everyone had good things to say about the food. I had a cheeseburger, which was classic and a good feed. The space itself is beautiful, with a well designed interior. The upstairs restaurant has a completely different feel from the sports bar downstairs, creating two unique spaces for everyone to enjoy. We often drop by for a drink after the footy, and it always has a great atmosphere. Overall I love this place, great vibes and a classic Melbourne spot to visit while exploring the city!
