After trying Taco Bell in Japan for the first time last year for a quick bite I was hooked. The food was quick, tasty and felt really fresh. The chilli chips were especially good as were the beef and bean burritos and the crunchwrap supreme. When I heard that Taco Bell was coming to Australia I eagerly awaited a venue opening in Melbourne so I could rush over and gorge, reliving my brief Japanese fast food romp.
I was extremely disappointed in what the Australian version had to offer.
Like many have already said, the wait time for the food was extreme. No idea what the hold up was considering how many people they had on the line, but it took forever. This wouldn't have been a problem for me personally if the food was worth it, but unfortunately, it was not.
The food was mediocre at best. I got quite a few meal items in anticipation of re-living the delightful little meal I had in Japan. I ordered the Stacked Chips and Nachos Supreme, a crunchwrap supreme, cheesy swirl and a Beefy Cheesy Burrito.
The Crunchwrap was ok, easily the best item out of the Bland Buffet. The veg was fresh, the wrap was nicely prepared but the beef had a weird taste to it, almost like it was an old batch or something. Even though the spices were there, there was a very peculiar after taste that ruined the whole thing and not enough cheese sauce.
The cheesy swirl was very bad, I do not recommend. After waiting all that time the cheese wasn't even melted and it also had a weird aftertaste.
Th stacked chips and nachos were both a mixed bag. The chips and nachos themselves were nice enough, but once again I had the same weird tasting mince. The Guac, diced tomatos, sour cream and cheese sauce were all very nice tasting, but the issue is there just isn't enough cheese sauce to kind of hold it all together. After you run out of the small amount of Guac and Sour Cream, it's bland city baby! You're left with dry chips/nachos with dry weird tasting meat that doesn't really cling together.
The beefy cheesy burito was ok. I didn't notice the beef tasting strange this time, but the rice wasn't quite cooked, which added a weird hard texture to the mix and there weren't any noticeable flavours.
Basically everything was borderline awful to mediocre except for the crunchwrap which was still pretty meandering compared to what Japan had offered.
This experience has changed Taco Bell from an eagerly awaited regular haunt to a once off, cautionary tale. I don't know why it's so hard to bring fast food franchises to Australia and have them not be a pathetic, overpriced shadow of their international offerings. ...
Read moreToday I attended this Taco Bell with my friend who is slightly more attractive than me (~5%), despite me being more muscular and sculpted.
I ordered a Boss Burrito Meal like usual. My friend who is also a great guy btw, ordered exactly the same thing about 4 minutes after me.
To my utter shock and surprise, my friends order was completed before mine! We had to wait approx 7 minutes longer for my order - the exact same meal - to be completed. I suspected that my friend was given preferential treatment because of his model looks. My concerns were briefly alleviated once the taco cooker advised me that the delay took place as they had made a batch of fresh chips - perhaps I was being looked after and my friend was given soggy lukewarm chips whilst I'd been given fresh and delicious chips.
This was quickly proven to be a false assumption, a complete coincidence I think. When I arrived home, I was saddened to find that there was no sauce sachets in my bag - I usually like to drop the sauce on my burrito before biting. I said to my friend "it's a shame we don't get sauce anymore", to which he replied "oh, I actually got two packets in my bag".
So, is it standard practice for you and your policies to preference more attractive people? Do you have a cut-off for attractiveness standards, or is it a comparison thing... Should I bring a deformed friend next time?
I heard from the Americans that eating Taco Bell might lead one to end up crying on the toilet afterwards, but I didn't think this is what they were referring to.
Overall the Burrito was great value and taste as per usual. See you...
