John Curtin is one of my locals for a few very good reasons. It's got a great rock pub atmosphere and it's actually close enough to the CBD to walk there from Parliament station or grab a uni tram up. They have live bands almost every night in there band-room upstairs which is really large and decked out well, with it's own bar and facils.
Downstairs you get to enjoy a good pub vibe, but with great music playing and normally a great japanese horror movie playing silently on the projector screen. The staff are great and the locals are all musos, uni kids and guys with beards and tattoos that makes me feel at home. The kitchen is back online and they are doing the pub classic, like burgers, parmas as well as some more exotic dishes like pork belly rolls and spicy shrimp, which are all done very well.
On Tuesday they have a free trivia night and Sunday session when you can lounge out the front in the sun and enjoy $13 jugs all day. Great place to catch up with a mate or be like myself and just go for a solo session and talk to the cool bartenders like Reese and Rusty!
Honestly if you're looking for a pub rather than a bar this is the best one in the...
Read moreTonight i ate at Sonnys with my friends, i have never been here before but they talked it up and convinced me to come eat here, literally NEVER AGAIN will we come here the service was disgusting and unhelpful.
i ordered a cheeseburger, when I received my meal the burger was covered in this “burger sauce” i tasted this burger and well to my surprise the sauce was so spicy I couldn’t eat it as i have problems with digesting spicy food, i asked my friend to try the burger and he agreed that it was spicy too, we tried to see if they could remake the burger without the sauce as on the menu it doesn’t say anything about the sauce being spicy.
the manager was rude and basically said no its not spicy even though two people tried this burger, she then gave me a knife and said to scrape the sauce off which was impossible as the whole thing was drenched in the stuff. we then went to the kitchen and they also were rude about it.
In the end I couldn’t eat it so it went...
Read moreGreat dive bar vibe in Carlton, on the edge of the CBD. Downstairs is always pumping, with a reall buzz and humm in the air. There's always a crowd among this wooden bar with Upstairs always has a great selection of local and touring bands n offer. Classic band room with sticky floors, dark curtains hanging and a quirky staircase in the middle of the room. About 500 people can fit upstairs on a sold-out night. I love the $12 beer and shot combo - reminds me a lot of dive bars in America. Highly reccommend this place for a good night out with local bnds and local company. Maybe give upstairs a steam clean and pull the blinds for a nicer...
