Overview: for a $49 three course lunch, it is a great price for some delightful high quality food which is great for business meetings, couples and friends. Would recommend the calamari. and the creme brulee. High quality standard of service
Wine: Barrosa 2018 Shiraz. I am no expert on wine, (yet) but I’ll just tell you what I tasted from this wine, it had an acidic taste to it, and was not as strong in the fruity grape flavour. A strong taste to the frontal side of the mouth, but I don’t want to get carried away, as I don’t want to insult any wine experts out there. Although they had a great range of wines on the full menu that did look very interesting to try out, but was not part of the 3 course lunch.
Lightly fried calamari: Next up that I chose for my entrée was the calamari. Which was nice and crispy, not too crunchy but also not too soggy, so it was perfectly cooked. The squid itself was warm and tender, (like a couple cuddling in front of an open fire on a cold day) except it was me eating squid. The coating which was familiar to like a panko bread crumb lacked in any noticeable strong spices or flavour, but this is where the Nam Jim sauce came in, which added so much to the dish although it had a sweet chilli sauce likeness to it, which got me curious if this was Nam jim sauce or a sticky sweet chilli sauce, I searched it up and the Nam jim sauce online came up with a very different picture from what I got, none the less even if it was Nam jim sauce or sweet chill sauce, it was still very enjoyable to eat 9/10
250g shorthorn rump: Knowing it says meat in the restaurant name I figured, maybe I should try a steak. Which I ordered medium. The charry flavours packed in nice within the grilled marks, I got a sauce on the side just in case the chefs were a bit light with the seasoning on the steak, which they were, so if your buying a steak get a sauce. I had the hot African chilli, because it sounded interesting, and it sure tasted interesting. The chillis were more on the peppery side of spice rather than the tangy and fruity, with a thick vibrant red appearance and texture, which was strangely addictive to dip the steak and chips into it. The steaks baste was light on butter, and instead had fruity tones to it, similar to like a pear or apple puree. If you’re deciding to order a steak here I’d recommend spending the extra money on a premium cut. Steak: 7/10 Sauce:10/10
Crème brulee: This crème brulee had a beautiful crack and creamy custard, it was not overly sweet and instead had a nice light vanilla taste. The ginger snap placed on top was the best part of this dish with a delightful snap and crumble which paired well with the lemon mascarpone. 10/10
Service: It was excellent with high standard of service 9/10
Vibe/environment: They offer an alfresco dining area with...
Read moreI have been a M&W customer since they opened their doors at their first South Yarra restaurant.y family and i have been loyal and even through the questionable menu changes we still supported. Last week I had major surgery and my fiance asked me what recovery meal will be good for comfort so of course i chose meat and wine. Unfortunately I have never been more disappointed in a meal my entire life. We ordered the barramundi and the ribs with mac and cheese along with a greek salad. The ribs were average however when i opened the greek salad i was so confused. It was a greek salad made out of ice burg lettuce, no olives at all and 2 tiny bits of onion. The barramundi was BURNT to a crispy, no sauce and the muscles shells were empty. I called the restaurant and spoke to their manager named Jay who apologised for the poor quality and he offered a voucher for $150 to cover the meal order. I accepted the apology and he said he would send it via post MAIL. I thought that was quite odd as being in 2024 the use of evouchers is highly encouraged for efficiency and advocating for a greener planet but for some reason he insisted on snail mail. I knew something didnt feel right but i ignored it anyway. Fast forward to a week later i have received a call from australia post saying my address was rejected because the restaurant provided the wrong address. The one provided sounded nothing like my address number therefore i feel the intention was that i never receive the voucher, forget about it then never have to use it. I am terribly disappointed because as a fellow south african far away from home a good meal that i pay for at a higher scale price will come with more respect and professionalism. I have added a photo of the salad and a photo of the fish. The fish image shows what we received at the top vs what they have advertised at the bottom. I am at a...
Read moreI’ve been to Meat & Wine Co quite a few times, whether it’s for their lunch menus, set menus, or for ala carte. Today was one of their days where quality control was good, and I ordered from Set Menu 3, which was 125$ plus a 16$ drink, and I ordered the Boerewors, the 300g O’Connor Fillet with salad and veal jus sauce, and the Bombe Alaska for dessert. The Boerewors were fantastic, except for the fact that in general they go for ~33$, which is pretty crazy for a sausage dish, considering it wasn’t some “world’s best sausage”. The fillet steak however, was pretty underwhelming for as advertised as for the cut of steak (most tender), an MB3+ and source. I’ve ordered the Monte New Yorker and Ribeye that go for cheaper that taste much more tender than it. And also, the sauce wasn’t for me, it didn’t taste of much flavor, and it taste of burnt stuff. The dessert was fantastic, with a great presentation along with it too, but I noticed it was significantly smaller than the Bombe Alaska I had in the Southbank venue, except they didn’t have a presentation. The 16$ drink I ordered wasn’t too good either, a Greener Pastures, which had 2/5 ice and not much flavor. The past times I’ve been to MW have been fantastic, and if you were to go, I would recommend you get stuff on the Express Lunch Menu, considering the prices are ridiculously awesome for the same quantity, quality of food you get relative to others, for example, any of the entrees, desserts, the Pork Ribs, and the Wagyu Beef Burger. If you want to step it up a notch in price, go for something like the Aged Wagyu Tartare, or the Monte steaks. Well, at least from my experience, not sure about the reviews around me. It’s definitely worthwhile visiting again, just a little perplexed over...
