A true wine bar, great selection of local wines and all meals from local producers. Such a gem.
Tonight we tried every dish on offer, and none of them disappointed. The clam soup, chicken hearts, sardines, kangaroo tartare, pea and ham (as my wife called them) “falaefel’, curd dumplings, barramundi and even for some mortadella and some cheese, as we call it a palate cleanser. This is the best way to experience the skill set of the chef. Small share plates, from top to bottom.
Sandra and Josh, thank you for having us and for such an amazing dining experience, and Dion is truly a master in the kitchen. Seriously nailed all dishes. And the sparkling from Rutherglen was a great way to wash it all down, and to top it off the rakija shot we did was a welcome surprise.
We will be back very soon, your venue felt like home and that is hard to come by in Melbourne. Na zdravje. Ronny & Charlene.
Edit sep 2 2024:
Whitebark Wine has once again proven why it's at the top of our list for Melbourne's wine bars. After two stellar experiences, our third visit was nothing short of spectacular. This charming establishment continues to hit all the right notes, from its cozy, inviting atmosphere to its exceptional service. Josh (co-owner with Sandra), our gracious host, ensured we felt like VIPs throughout the evening, while Chef Dion dazzled us with his culinary artistry right before our eyes.
The menu at Whitebark is a celebration of creativity and flavor balance. We savored an array of dishes that left us raving. The kangaroo tartare, served with crispy homemade chips, was both innovative and delicious. The pickle plate offered a delightful medley of tangy and savory bites, while the homemade bread with curds and chili was a perfect, comforting start. But it was the chicken hearts with chili jam and mint cream that truly stole the show, along with the standout yacon and macadamia dish. Each plate was thoughtfully crafted, like the barramundi with spiced lemon and nutmeg or the zesty lemon pepper prawns on lentil toast.
Whitebark Wine has firmly cemented itself as our favorite wine bar in Melbourne, delivering consistently outstanding experiences every time.

Read moreThis is an amazing places and would highly recommend. Staff are wonderful and knowledgeable on their food and wine. The little snacks and dishes are delicious, unique, creative having involved australian ingredients, locally sourced produce and well priced. The emu and cheese tart are the standouts. They have an amazing ethos on lowering waste and utilising ingredients on what most restaurants would throw out. Having used some old potato cake batter as the tart shell. Also having on tap wines that come in reusable kegs to have less waste on wine bottles, pumping nitrogen gas into the keg once poured to keep the rest of the wine fresh and crisp. Having much less plastic waste than your usual restaurant and having their compost waste picked up and turned into food for animals and fertiliser by using black soldier flies. Amazing fun, casual dining place whether it’s for some snacks, a glass of wine or a dinner. Oh and must try the pickles and ferments that come with the best Vegemite preserved eggs. Thanks to Josh, Sandra and Dion can’t wait...
