Nothing says the complimentary bread isn’t fresh like serving it as toast, even if you pipe whipped butter so it looks fancy. I found The Spanish Grill to be both overpriced and underwhelming. The menu is a cultural collision that takes some good ideas and fritters them away. Foie gras chawanmushi ($36) could be brilliant if it was a warm, pan-seared lobe cut for ease of eating on room temperature set custard (rather than the very cold version we received), without the accompanying tomato bruschetta. You don’t eat this dish on toast.
Sending out a trio of ceviche ($42) for 3-4 people with five mini tostada was confusing. Staff did rectify this upon request. The kingfish was prepared too early so ‘cooked’ by acid. Raw salmon didn’t sing with acidic fresh pineapple, but I liked the generous spike of chilli. Tuna ceviche was the best of the bunch, though it performed better when eaten with a spoon rather than on the oil-dominated crackers.
Value was hard to find on the wine list with markups unevenly applied. For a straight double-up on retail prices, the 2022 Clyde Park Estate Chardonnay ($130) is a powerful wine that won’t ruin ceviche and will stretch to meet red meat. We went for the Brazilian churrasco ($62/400g) taking it at the chef’s suggested level of cooking, which floor staff said would be medium rare. It arrived blue and cold in the middle, despite the metal sword. With more cooking it would have been a decent dish against acidic grilled pineapple and red chimmichurri. Creamed spinach ($13) would be better billed as a cheese sauce with a sprinkling of spinach. After being asked for feedback and giving what I wrote here, staff insisted on applying a 15% discount to the...
Read moreThe Spanish Grill never disappoints! We have dined here a few times over the years. The service is terrific and Adam really knows how to work the grill to perfection. The flavours he can extract are a true testament to his skill and dedication. The Eye Fillet and the Scotch Fillet were both superb. Probably the best Eye Fillet I have had anywhere in the world! The shared Sashimi entree was also sublime. The Affogato and Crema Catalana (see photos) were a wonderful way to complete a great night. Thanks to the reputation and knowledge of Maitre d' Graeme Blaze, the service at the Spanish Grill has risen to the next level! If you get a chance, ask Graeme about some of the places he has worked around the world. The list is highly impressive and even includes The Savoy Hotel in London. Keep up the fantastic work Graeme! You made our dining experience extra special :-) Make sure you ask for a break between the courses (if you want one) as the food can come a little bit too quickly. When in Mildura, don't miss the opportunity to dine at one of the town's best...
Read moreSo many problems. TBone was chargrilled to medium…mostly but part almost blue others cremated. Staff were attentive but had no idea of their job, after commenting on how large the sides were ( one side will easily do two or three people) our server just said “ oh most people know how big they are sometimes I tell people sometimes I just dont. Well some people have never been here before! I understand the need for communications to floor staff, but hanging a two way radio for the neck of your uniform makes you look more like a bouncer and less like wait staff. This could be a great place if it could just workout if it’s a steak house OR as they seem to be playing at fine dinning OR an up market Bistro. Please choose one. Also when when we were finally presents the bill, after waiting for other walkins to be seated , and suggesting the Dinning experience wasn’t great was almost laughed off by what I guess was a manager? All in all a very...
