Lunch at Stefanos.
The ambiente imitates an Italian eatery as perceived as such in Australia. A good standard.
We ordered 4 dishes. Mushroom burger is ok, but not exciting good. I would notice that a sharper knife for the burger should be offered. It is common, though, to get a standard cutting knife everywhere. Chips, together with the burger, resemble a classic Burger Chips dish. There's nothing wrong with that. And the chips were well fried, thick and maybe not from the bag?
Suacage pasta was tasty, missing maybe some pepper, spicyness.
Gnocchi with Stefanos sauce was ok. The Gnocchi were massive. I would prefer them a bit lighter in texture and fresher in the arrangement. Red sauce with parsley topped with a bit of cheese, it is ok, but heavier as wished for a lunch dish.
I cried when there was no Osso Bucco available!
The steamed vege was nicely glazed, green zucchini, Brussel sprouts, and broccolinis. Ok, good! A good choice for a side dish.
The service was a bit strange. We have been asked to sit on a table for six. Then suddenly the manager? Asked if we were waiting for anyone else. On our answer, she did not even reply. She just turned away and continued her work. We have noticed her being rude to other staff. Not rude but abrupt. Do not do that in front of your customers! A manager must be the friendliness personified.
Not offered the wine list, even after I started looking on the displayed wines. Why?
Overall, I had higher expectations. It's a good restaurant, but it can do it much better. Improve the organisation, train your staff to be polite besides being "stylish" and with "attitude". And play a bit more with the dishes. Do not forget your wine list!
Last moment addition... desert practically not existing. The pantry displayed mass-produced flourless "persian" tart, lemon curd, and a few almond croissants. These are...
Read moreWhen I come here once earlier in the year th service was attentive and the foccacia I had was tasty, but upset me stomach due to the heavy oil content and was at a higher price then I'd usually pay.
I attended the cafe for a sit down meal. I was seated with no menu or water for about 10 minutes until I had to find another server who was receptive and attentive. Based on my experience with the original server I left and am giving the experience one star. She was rude and offered no apology for keeping me waiting and failing to give a menu. I understand they are steady paced, but respect and courtesy amongst staff is something I value particularly at such a renowned establishment.
Being from a healthcare professional from Melbourne, I can empathise with busy work environemts but expected better service from such a prestigious hospitality venue and found the experience very disappointing. After speaking to the original server telling her I had been waiting a while and had to approach another staff member for a menu a got no apology or acknowledgment. I...
Read more(3.5 stars) Just up the road from Mildura’s Kar-Rama Hotel, Twenty Seven Cafe and Providore does a good breakfast. While it didn’t have the coffee or the vibe of Brass Monkey—we did dine early on a public holiday—they do make an equally enjoyable chilli eggs ($25) for almost the same price. Here the softly set scrambled eggs are served on sourdough with a fresh tomato salsa topper. The chilli oil had a building heat that saw me check their product shelves to see if I could take some home with me (it wasn’t to be).
Mushrooms on house-made sourdough ($24) piled a good collection of well-handled fungi on a fluffy mound of goats cheese. They topped the lot with vibrant fresh mint and parsley for an enjoyable breakfast plate that felt like it showcased the region. Coffee, whichever way you like it ($5.50 cup/$6 mug), by Vittoria felt serviceable rather than pleasurable, but I’ve never been particularly enamoured with this roaster. I was however captivated by the beach and water themed photographic art, even if the nearest coastline is several hundred...
