Decided to give this place a go, highly rated chicken laksa, awards, etc. So its lunchtime, really busy, they give me a number. The closest seat i find is about 30 metres away. Im looking, not sure how im supposed to know when my number is called. Eventually I see a bowl on top of the counter and one of the staff mouthing what i assume is a number. No chance of being heard, she may as well have been whispering the number with all the background noise. I go over and find it's mine. Great. Go back to my table and wrestle it from some sneek thieves. Spoon and fork, no chopsticks. Go get chopsticks. The soup is fine, nice flavour if a bit too coconuty if thats a thing. No issues. A bit too much noodles but thats ok. Then there's the chicken. Lots of chicken. Lots of large, thick, dry chicken breast. So dry it refuses to break down, teeth struggling, and now its sucking all the moisture from my mouth. I struggled with a couple of pieces but give up, its hard work, tiring, jaw muscles are beginning to get a burn. Half way and im done. Too hard. And no tofu. Complainted about the meal, and was told tofu was extra. Really? First laksa i have ever had to ask for tofu as an extra. If this is an award winning laksa, i dread to think what the rest...

Darwin is known for great Asian food thanks to being a very multi-cultural place. You can find incredible food in the locale markets such as (Nightcliff, Parap, Mindil beach, and Rapid Creek markets) and also the everyday eateries.

I had heard great things about Chok's place so of course I was very keen to try it!

Chok's place is located in Smith street in the Galleria shopping precinct in the Darwin mall. Thankfully there is air-conditioning, so perfect for cooling off if you have been walking about town.

My husband and I decided to try the seafood Laksa and asked if I could also have come chicken in there also.

I absolutely loved the rich and moreish broth which was packed full of flavor! It was very generous with the protein, and was so aromatic, delicious and fresh! It had the perfect kick with the right amount of chilli and spices, Hokkien and Vermicelli noodles, and a lovely hard boiled egg!

The owner Jason who is super humble and nice, has been working here with his family since he was in his teens, and has now been operating it for over 16 years. You can certainly tell that so much love and passion goes into each bowl of happiness :)

Make sure you stop by if you are...

We had heard all the rave reviews but only had one shot to taste Chok’s laksa for ourselves - breakfast at 9am before our flight back to Sydney. Unfortunately, opening time had changed to 10… Thankfully the look of sadness on our faces was enough to convince Chok to whip up a few laksas for us. A perfect size serving for breakfast, with a rich, flavourful soup and a sufficient hit of chilli to wake up your senses. The chicken was tender and tasty and the two types of noodle perfectly cooked. The atmosphere is just a mall, but gems are often found in rough surroundings. Thanks for a great laksa...

Chok's Place is located inside The Galleria in Darwin's Smith Street Mall. It's only open for lunch as it's a food outlet in air-conditioned food court. Please don't let that put you off. We had been advised this was a great place for a good laksa in Darwin, and we were not let down. We ordered the Chicken Laksa and absolutely loved it. It was a very generous portion and full of so much flavour. Up there with one of the best laksa's we have tasted. We enjoyed our meal in the seating area with all the CBD office workers enjoying their lunch. A great spot to stop, eat and enjoy in the cool.
