Barrels Bar — Restaurant in Port Campbell

There is one word to describe this place. Rude.

The location and decor is extremely inviting and why we went here for a drink while wandering about the town. From the moment we arrived, however, the barman made us instantly feel as though he didn’t want us there and wanted to close (despite it being over an hour until close time and a few others having food there). He didn’t respond to us saying hello or asking him how he was, he didn’t respond when we asked what beers were on offer, and he acted like we’d asked for something unspeakable when I changed my pint order (before he’d even got close to pouring it).

We brushed it off as a misinterpretation but while we sat having our drinks, we were able to watch him “interact” with other customers. Interact is used loosely as he again barely made any effort to talk to them. The only time he made effort was so he could sell a bottle of Whiskey.

When we left, we decided to let him know how uncomfortable he made us feel. Anyone who understands how to work in Hospo knows to just smile and apologise… swallow your pride and say sorry even if you disagree (this is coming from a barman) just so the customer can leave feeling heard and happier. Instead, the barman decided to argue with us and be sarcastic. Continuing his poor attitude and making us VERY happy to leave and never set...

I had hoped to give a better review. Amazing location, really nice decor, food also good. Drinks as expected. Just what port Campbell needs. The letdown was the behaviour behind the scenes which was in Clear view of the customers. A very angry, tempered male working in the kitchen, dropping things, throwing tea towels around banging down items all very aggressively, he clearly did not want to be there and this sentiment and vibe was felt and left us feeling uncomfortable and really tainted what could have been a truly fabulous experience. I felt sorry for the woman taking the orders maintaining a cool calm demeanour whilst her colleague was bashing around behind her clearly making things very uncomfortable. It’s such a shame that one person (possibly just having one bad day? who knows) can really impact the customer experience and taint a business...

There was a such a nice atmosphere at this bar! Amy questions we had about drinks/ food were answered. We ordered all 3 flights to try and share, and was pleasantly surprised when we were given information cards which we described each drink and the flavour you’d be expecting!
