We booked Mekong Thai Lao on the recommendation of a friend. Not sure if the restaurant has changed hands but there was, unfortunately, not much to recommend from our experience last night. The name of the restaurant implies Lao Thai fusion. The only Lao item on the menu was the larb. No sticky rice or other classic north eastern Thai Lao items on the menu. We ordered fish cakes, curry puffs, chilli chicken basil, massaman LAMB, calamari salad, chilies in fish sauce and rice. Our server was delightful but nothing else was. Fish cakes had run out at 7pm, the other entrees were tiny, the chicken chilli basil arrived as either lamb or beef- not chicken, the chilies in fish sauce arrived without ANY sauce, the calamari salad was dry and tasteless and the massaman LAMB tasted like beef. Our server told us it was lamb but we all highly doubt that. The restaurant is fully licensed. We ordered a Pinot Gris that was dumped on our table, No offer to taste, no pouring of the wine offered, no top ups which are what you would expect in a fully licensed venue. We had, unfortunately, poured the wine before tasting. It was also unpleasant. The restaurant closes at 9pm. At 8:45pm on a Saturday night the staff opened the glass entrance doors allowing a blast of cold winter air to flow into the restaurant. The doors remained open until we left. Our bill came to $186 for 3. We expected far more for the amount of money paid. A...

Have previously been to this restaurant, admittedly within 2 yrs ago. The first time we were there, could not believe how wonderful it was, a very busy night but we were able to get a table, the food was fabulous. Tonight, again being in Port Macquarie we decided to have dinner here, not as busy, however a huge disappointment, service from the girls was excellent but the food has definitely gone downhill.

There was flavour, not exactly Thai, not sure what it was !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The only food that was hot, entrees, the rice was cold and dry, both mains were tepid in temperature, yes we sat near the outer area of the restaurant but food was not even hot when bought to the table. The waitress did ask how we were enjoying our meal and yes I did say to her that it was ok but cold. Obviously it seems to be a common problem from other reviews that I have read, seems management don't really give a stuff.

Unfortunately if and when back in Port Macquarie, we will not make the mistake of returning and I will not recommend this establishment. Such a shame as the location is...

Dropped by Mekong Thai Lao Restaurant for lunch over the weekend and had a pretty good experience. I ordered just for myself—the portion size was reasonable, and the food tasted just fine, fresh and satisfying overall. What I liked was their menu; it’s extensive with a great variety of options, letting you try lots from both Lao and Thai cuisines. The staff was friendly and happy to accommodate dietary requirements, which is great if you have any special requests. Bathrooms are outside—you just need to ask staff for the key, which is handy. The real highlight was the waterfront view, which made the meal feel extra special. Plus, street parking is available, so getting there was really easy. Menu is a bit pricy though! Restaurant is closed on mondays and opens for lunch and dinner for most other days except tuesday, wednesday which are only for dinner.

Great service really really great food the chicken panang was one of the nicest I've had is a while. To the best but pretty darn good. The staff were great and tolerated my 3 and 1 yr old with out any issues. The staff regularly interacted with my little 1yr girl and even went and grabbed a toy for her to play with. I'll be back for sure. Just a pity I live 3hrs away otherwise I'd be here once a week. Tha ks for a great night

Beautiful open environment next to the water, perfect ambience for relaxing dinner. The pad Thai with chicken and fried rice were decent although on the sweeter end of the scale. Was not a huge fan of the soft shell crab entree. The staff were attentive and friendly. Price was on the higher end but should be expected for a waterside restaurant. Overall was a good experience and would try again!
