Hog's Breath Cafe Mackay — Restaurant in Queensland

I've been going to Hog's Breath (HB) for many years (I even had a gold card), but since most of the locations in VIC have closed down, I was excited to visit the original one I used to frequent when I lived here.

What a massive letdown.

First off, the service was outstanding. We were seated promptly, and the staff were very welcoming. No complaints there, but the food was a completely different story.

I ordered the lite cut prime rib with salt and pepper calamari, vegetables, and mashed potatoes. While the steak was perfectly cooked to medium, that's where the positives ended. It wasn't seasoned and was served cold. The calamari was chewy and burnt, the mashed potatoes tasted like they were made from frozen instant potatoes and were also cold. The vegetables were the only part of the meal I actually enjoyed. The whole dish lacked flavor, and I didn’t even finish it.

I tried my Mum’s dish, the Bacon Avocado & Béarnaise Chicken Schnitzel, and it, too, was served cold and packed flavour, with the avocado being served brown.

Even though my nephew said he enjoyed his meal, he also mentioned that it was cold, and he didn't finish his meal.

The cost was quite expensive for the three of us (nearly $160 for 3 emails, 3 drinks), which was disappointing. Hog's Breath has always been on the pricier side, but the quality always justified it. After tonight's experience, though, I won’t be returning.

So we have been regulars at Hogs Breath Mackay for probably 15 years, dine once every 3 months or so but in the last year every month we take the kids there as a treat. Headed in on Monday night, meals were ok usually I'd say great but a piece of my chicken parmi didn't taste right so I didn't eat it & the first mouth full of that piece I spat back out on a napkin. Anyways apart from that the meals were great. Until we went to pay & found out they no longer do kids eat free Monday/Tuesday night with a paying adult anymore. That was a HUGE disappointment, as a family with kids this really appealed to us & made it more affordable for us to have a night out once a month while supporting a local business. Just wanted to give other family's the heads up before going in & getting caught out like we did.

Worst meal in Mackay! Moved here 6 months ago, took my team of 9 to eat because of the brand and I had eaten at other restaurants and enjoyed it. Ordered an 18 hour slow cooked prime rib only to be told after ordering they were out and a rib fillet would be in its place, but not to worry as it was cheaper. The cut of meat was over cooked and terrible, it looked like minute steak. I sent my meal back 3 times and asked for it to be cooked again each time. 1st time was microwaved, I know this because I ordered mine medium rare and my employee sent hers back rare and mine arrived 10 minutes before hers. Another meal had a hair in it, another meal with ribs was burnt to the crisp, mash was not even luke warm, medium rare steaks were well done, vegetables were cold on all plates. The one thing they got right was the entree's. It then took over an hour for them to sort out our bill at first offering a discount on every meal, then the manager on duty getting the trainings manager to deal with us whilst she stood back and observed. And finally to top it off when they were talking to the owner on the phone we were told it was our waiters mum only for the waiter to come inform us it was the owner!
