If you have any allergy or dietary requirements, DO NOT trust this restaurant.
I will preface this by holding my hands up and saying I clearly made a mistake in not disclosing I was coeliac however, I made a point to request my meals be gluten free multiple times.
Unfortunately, unlike almost all other restaurants I have visited that claim to cater for dietary requirements, Jam has a very different idea as to what gluten-free means.
When I ordered my food and asked what was gluten free, I was pointed towards several menu items which I was told did not contain gluten, some of which I ordered. Following the meal I experienced a severe allergic reaction.
When I reached out to Jam to discuss this, the attitude and response from the manager Paul was effectively “too bad but this is your fault, not ours”. Supposedly I should know that when I am told food is gluten free, that only means that the ingredients don’t contain gluten but the meal itself does contain gluten due to cross contamination. Where most places that are aware of cross contamination would suggest their meals are “low gluten” or the staff may inform you there is high cross contamination, Jam does not feel the need to do this.
It is reckless and arrogant that Jam refuses to acknowledge how dangerous it is to say a meal does not contain an allergen when they are fully aware of there being a risk that it does. It is not the responsibility of the individual to stress the severity of their allergy, if a meal is requested to be free of an allergen, it then becomes the responsibility of the restaurant to either ensure that the meal does not contain these allergens or warn the customer of the risk.
I am in awe that they have the audacity to take no responsibility and instead attempt to shift the blame on to the person that they have made violently sick.
I would also suggest that based on the intensity of my reaction, this was more than cross contamination and the meals did in fact contain ingredients with gluten. However, with the apathetic attitude I received from Paul, I would not expect them to admit this, even if it was the case. Clearly the management at Jam is incapable of taking responsibility for their own mistakes.
A complete lack of care and zero accountability taken by the restaurant is very disappointing. Common sense would assume that when someone repeatedly asks for gluten free, there is a significant reason to do so and if you are aware of a cross contamination risk, surely it would be worth mentioning.
If you have any kind of allergy, I would highly recommend giving Jam a miss and looking to some of Townsville’s other restaurants that will take your dietary requirement seriously and not put your...
Read moreFavourable situated on a corner overlooking the city and the river, the Jam Corner is the epitome of european chic. Predominately black grey and white with contrasts in texture created by pressed metal around the bar and fabulous touches of damask wall paper and some very original cane based light shades. The dining chairs, one single piece of elegantly curved wood, add warmth and style as do the bench seats and cushions around the windows and several booths available. An ornate black mirror and a large white iron chandelier complete the look, To the side of the front counter, a stunning function/dining room is striking in its black and grey stripes, french chairs, and stunning silver mirror and chandelier. The Alfresco area also includes bench seat and cushions and a large table for groups. The function centre, which occupies the top floor has lavish decor of grey and black with brilliant reds featured in the wall paper, drapes and cushions. The verandah, hung with fairy lights, has varied seating arrangements with loverly contrasting cushions, tables and potted tress scattered between. This restaurant is dedicated to providing a seasonally inspired menu, of locally sourced, organic food, where possible. Our selections from the dinner menu were, Oyster au naturale and kataifi wrapped with harissa and Yarra Valley pearls. Then Townsville half shell scallops, truffle potatoes, chorizo & salmoriglio, both dishes very memorable. Our mains were, Pepper crusted Huon salmon on a fennel risotto with Schezwan calamari and red wine reduction and Western plains pork belly, crackle, green apple, pumpkin cream hazelnut & vincotto, (the crackling was superb). Both dishes were prepared and presented to perfection and totally unforgettable. Dessert was of 4 flavours of winter chocolate petit fours, sticky date pudding / apple crumble / lemon pudding / iced cherry and chocolate souffle. To take four popular desserts and encase each one in dark chocolate was inspired, and totally delectable. The menu was accompanied by a small but selective wine list. We finished with the outstanding Piazza Doro Di Manfredi coffee. Add to the fabulous food, friendly and knowledgable service and relaxing ambience, this would have to be at the top of the list of our best dining...
Read moreNew to Townsville and wanted a Special night to celebrate a birthday. When booking online stated Birthday. Why ask the question if there’s no acknowledgment of same. 6.30 booking few people…Maître d’ ( I presumed) seated us so far so good. Ordered drinks order taken then wheels seemed to fall off. Entrees fine; cleared after reasonable time mains arrived. Steak was excellent $13 for a side of carrots??? Potato ???? served with steak disgusting. Ravioli dry and surprisingly no type of sauce/ dressing at all. Had ordered side salad to accompany…my fault in not asking what it would be. 3 wedges of pear with 3 cos lettuce leaves saturated in some sort of red sauce $12. Sat for at least 30 minutes after finishing before table was cleared after requesting. Sat a further 30 minutes waiting to be presented with Dessert menu…..finally I approached MD at front “Are we sitting in the Naughty corner?” As no one came near us although the table beside us had been cleared and attended to as well as others. Yes as the evening progressed it got busier. BUT the name of the game is SERVICE when your charging top end. Staff are one of your biggest expenses. You have plenty almost too many who in the main were aimlessly walking around or drinking/ talking behind the bar. Food was Ok but except for the steak not worth the money. As far as service!!!!! Negligible…..maybe some proper training...
