Let’s be honest…I really want 24 York to thrive and not just survive. I think Sydney is really lacking in eateries with short simple menus done immaculately well. Think infamous single ramen joints in Tokyo with 1 incredible ramen or the steak frites from the renowned Relais de l’Entrecôte in Paris, that was my benchmark. No fancy fine dining expectations here.
Dined here last night on opening weekend and here’s my review:
Service : 10/10 warm, attentive and approachable without being fussy.
Vibes: 10/10 it has an awesome madmen feel to it with a dash of class.
Beverage: 8/10 - Simple but impactful wine list with enough variety to delight you.
Food: 6/10 - You would expect the only selection to really shine. Sure the sauces were great (we road-tested 3 sauces), I expected that. The frites amazing! But needed more in volume. The steak 🥩, unfortunately that was a let down. The quality was promising but its was too thin and I felt like I was eating a steak sandwich minus the trimmings…or was it a de ja vu with a minute steak? We ordered medium (no option to have medium rare) and it definitely came out well done becos it was too thin, understandably hard to control the medium status when it’s this thin.
What would get you 5 stars? double the thickness offer the option of extra frites or unlimited servings just like Relais de l’Entrecôte.
Extra points given for their cheese cake we shared, delicious and just enough to carry you to feeling satisfied.
With the bill $170 for 2, in a city filled with quality options at this price point, I am really hoping 24 York is reading this….it has the potential, potential to make me become...
Read moreI have to say the meal was beautiful. And again the scotch fillet cooked to perfection. Salad was lovely and service great. I did however on my first visit question my bill as I believed that what I had ordered was not what the bill stated. As I didn't pick this up till latter I sent a request to see if I had got the incorrect bill. I did get a response and a back and forth but still no final reply. I have after my second visit worked out what the difference in the bill was. It was a $13 bottle of still water. And me not being aware and not seeing anywhere on the menu or drinks list that what I thought was a bottle of water and that any other place I have been to just provides. 24 York charge $13. Not knowing we said ok to another bottle of water and hence on my bill which I did check this time $26 for bottles of water. HAVE A LOOK AT THE ONLINE MENU. NO MENTION OF WATER COSTING $13. Some of the most expensive restaurants in Sydney will provide a bottle of water for the table. I now understand why customers were getting refills out of metal jugs. They are getting the free stuff. I got the exactly tasting same water I'm sure. Now I know, so be aware new people. Don't say yes to a bottle of still water. It's not listed anywhere as costing $13 which I'm sure is not...
Read moreThere were a few restaurant review I have seen on Tik Tok that I wanted to try out. This place was the only one with room. I was dressed casually in t shirt and track pants so I went past to check it out first and saw it was fine dining. The waitress spotted me and invited me in and I decided to stay. It was 3:30pm and very quiet during the weekday so I didn’t feel as out of place.
I eventually order the steak and frites cooked medium and finished with the cheesecake. The scotch fillet was cut thin like a minute steak. Was still red on the inside but not meat juices flowing.
The beef tallow chips were crunchy and looked great but putting shoestring fries on an open plate is asking for trouble as it goes cold within less than 5 mins no matter how well it was cooked. Other steak places either have the fries in a tiny metal cage lined with wax paper or use thicker steak fries.
Being a thin steak if you are hungry you should get the leaf salad or dessert. I ended up getting the small cheesecake. Not my usually choice but the cheese was smooth and velvety.
I think a place like this would have worked better pre covid with lots of cashed up business executives needing a...
