I had an absolutely fantastic dining experience at Calaveras Mexican Cantina & Tequila Bar in Newtown, and I can confidently say this spot is now one of my favorites in the area!

From the moment I walked in, I was struck by the vibrant, energetic atmosphere of the place. The decor is colorful, bold, and authentically Mexican, with murals and rustic touches that create a lively yet relaxed ambiance. The music was upbeat, adding to the festive mood, and the staff were welcoming and friendly from the get-go. It immediately felt like a place where you could truly unwind and enjoy good food with great company.

Now, let’s talk about the food. Everything we ordered was exceptional. The tacos were a highlight—filled with perfectly seasoned meats (we had the slow-cooked beef and crispy pork) that were tender, juicy, and bursting with flavor. The guacamole was another standout; it was creamy with just the right balance of lime and seasoning, and paired beautifully with the crisp tortilla chips.

The service was impeccable throughout the evening. Our server was knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive without being overbearing. I always find myself in Newtown and walking by this place and I finally got the chance to visit! The venue is filled with Mexican-inspired decor and have an incredible, authentic menu to match. They serve an extensive range of cocktails, imported beers, and over 80 tequilas!

Their Calaveras Margarita is a must order. Super easy to drink, delicious and they give you these light up coasters because hey, why not?! Oh, and their frozen margarita shots are dangerous. They're so delicious, you forget they're alcoholic and you lose track of how many you order. Flavours include lemon, peach, strawberry, passionfruit, mango, melon, apple sour, blue curaçao & blood orange. They also serve them as a regular cocktail or you can go hard with a litre.

With food, we had to start off with corn chips & guacamole! The corn chips were topped off with chilli salt which really took it up a notch. The Ceviche de Pescado was so freakn good, I wanted to cry. The fish was just beautiful and I loved the lime juice hit. I can't recommend this dish enough!

For tacos, we ordered the Camaron El Mar (prawn), Fish Playa, El Toro (spicy chorizo) & Senor Pollo (chicken). The tortillas were soft making it super easy to pick up the tacos and overall, they were full of flavour.

To end the night, we ordered their Churros. I thought they were nice but I prefer to dip them in the sauce instead of having it drizzled on top. I really want to go back and try their ice-cream sandwich...
