My mate had been urging me to visit Ciccone & Sons for ages. One bite into their creamy Buttermilk & Passionfruit ($7/2 scoops) and I was kicking myself for not listening to her sooner. Set on busy Regent Street in Redfern, the simply furnished gelateria has an old-school appeal. With a retro-styled gelato cart sitting in the doorway, the long, thin room is decked out in burgundy and cream; furnished with wooden church pews and round, marble-topped tables.

Bucking the trend of mounds of colourful gelato to lure in the patrons, co-owner and gelato-maker, Mark Megahey, has opted to use pozzetti, traditional Italian cylindrical containers buried deep inside the counter. You’ll understand why when you roll this gelato around in your mouth – it has a wonderful, textural mouthfeel, with absolutely no ice-crystals.

With nothing to look at, you’ll be deciding on your sweet treat by flavour alone. The day’s small-batch selections are spelled out on a wood-framed, burgundy menu-board that would look quite at home in an R.S.L. club. While the aforementioned tangy buttermilk & passionfruit with its rolling sweet’n’sour flavour profile was my definite favourite, the Chocolate Fruit & Nut ($7/2 scoops) was also exceptional. The throaty dark chocolate made me feel like I was gnawing on a high-quality chocolate block filled with premium quality dried fruit. Neither flavour was over-sweet, and while they were creamier than other Italian-style gelato I’ve tried, it's hard to complain about creaminess when it doesn't leave your mouth coated with a fatty slick.

Walking the fine line between being insipid and being so intense you bottom out quickly, the cleverly adult Salted Cashew ($7/2 scoops) allows room for you to also enjoy the taste of the high-quality Jersey milk it is made from. Smash your icy treat with a Latte ($3.50) in the afternoon, or pop into this humble but charming space post-dinner for a classic ice cream sundae against some hard liquor.

Don’t wait as long as I did to discover...

We acknowledge the profound impacts of colonialism on Indigenous peoples. Indeed, these include; • A dramatic increase in life expectancy, which has more than doubled over time. • The establishment of an international common language (English), along with the rule of law, equality before the law, and a robust legal system built on centuries of precedent. • Contributions to literature, science, technology, and medicine, among many other fields. • The protection of Aboriginal women from certain traditional practices that could be described as oppressive or archaic. • Substantial financial support: in 2015–16, the Australian Government spent approximately $33 billion on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. According to the Productivity Commission, the estimated expenditure per person was $44,886 — around twice the amount spent per non-Indigenous Australian ($22,356).

Despite these realities, there appears to be a contradiction within the so-called “Aboriginal industry.” On the one hand, there is a demand to “close the gap” in living standards; on the other, a desire to remain on traditional lands and maintain traditional lifestyles, all while benefiting from modern systems and conveniences such as medicine, transportation, communication, and healthcare.

Furthermore, calls for reparations for “stolen wealth” overlook the fact that British settlement enabled the extraction and development of Australia’s resources — something that had not occurred over 65,000 years of Indigenous habitation. It could be argued that, rather than demanding reparations, there should be recognition of the transformative changes and opportunities that...

I visited this place 6 times in the past one month 😂 Olive oil flavour is sensational, chocolate orange and cinnamon are also amazing, tiramisu is to die for, salted cashew and black sesame were great too. oh did I mention banana? one of my favorite. Their sorbet options were lovely too, I tried orange and ginger sorbet and mandarin sorbet and both were absolutely gorgeous. They really have a right amount of sweetness and the it is very flavorful. texture spot on. C&S is one of my favorite Gelateria in whole world, and trust me, I visited a lot in different countries. I feel like portions are a bit different depending on who is serving (I always get 3 scoops) but I'm not complaining, it felt like one was extra generous and the others were just sticking to the standard haha. just one feedback : I wished buttermilk and passion flavor had a little more passion fruit flavor in it, a little bit more tangy flavor will balance out well. mine was just creamy. although it was still lovely tasty gelato. I'll visit many more times while I'm in the area....

12/7/24 Visited again whilst out in Redfern. This place is a neighbourhood classic and, when I first visited, I was impressed by the smoothness and creaminess. Over the years, I've come back a few times and still think their tiramisu and pistachio are quite solid. On this occasion, I tried the buttermilk with passionfruit and banana... Creaminess: S+, 8.5/10. Above average for sure Consistency: S, 8/10. A bit more lumpy than I remember... Still fairly smooth. Value: B, 6/10. $9 for two scoops is amongst the most expensive in Sydney sadly. Banana: A, 7/10. Not usually a fan of banana since usually tastes like overly ripe and today was sadly not an exception Buttermilk: A, 7/10. Not really any passionfruit flavour... Pretty much a buttery vanilla. 2022 Tiramisu: SS, 9/10. Good intensity of flavour with nice coffee soaked ladyfingers Pistachio: S, 8/10
