My first experience with "Bún Thang" was a delightful discovery. This traditional Vietnamese noodle soup, hailing from Hanoi, proved to be the perfect remedy for a gloomy day. The dish's intricate preparation and delicate flavors impressed me, featuring thin rice vermicelli noodles, shredded chicken, pork slices, omelet strips, and a variety of herbs. The broth, crafted from chicken and pork bones, held a nuanced taste heightened by fish sauce and hints of dried shrimp. Garnished with green onions, cilantro, and sometimes shallots, "Bún Thang" stands as a visually appealing and flavorful testament to the rich culinary diversity of Vietnamese cuisine.
To start, we indulged in "nem cua bể," a delicious appetizer boasting a perfect crisp exterior and juicy interior, adding another layer of culinary excellence to the overall dining experience.
Of course, we also ordered the famous dish that people claim has defined the name of this restaurant, called “cơm gà đặc biệt.” It is accompanied by “gỏi gà,” resembling a traditional Vietnamese style chicken salad. However, it fell below our expectations. The chicken yellow rice, which should be the easiest part, appeared tasteless and carried a hint of a plastic smell. It reminded me of the distinct plastic taste one gets when rice is cooked, immediately stored in a plastic container, reheated, and then served – a particular plastic taste that lingered in the back of my throat and was quite annoying.
Despite the rice hiccup, the accompanying sauce stood out with its nice and unique flavor profile. The star of the show, the chicken, redeemed the meal. It was absolutely delicious, boasting moist and tender qualities that pleased the palate.
If you’re a fan of free-range chicken, this restaurant is worth a visit for the flavorful and well-prepared poultry. While the “cơm gà” didn’t meet expectations, the standout chicken dish and unique sauce make it a place to consider, especially for those who appreciate quality, free-range options.
The owner and staff are incredibly friendly and fair. Despite occasional queue jumpers, they handle it with grace, politely asking them to line up. The staff, always kind, enthusiastically guide you to standout dishes when you make any requests, making the dining experience truly enjoyable.
Overall, this is a place I will definitely come back to, especially when winter is approaching. I appreciate their unique chicken broth from “Bún Thang”
One peculiar thing about this place is that their menu doesn’t have English options; it's only in Vietnamese. I don't know if they have hidden the English version of the menu somewhere, which means I had to translate everything for my non-speaking Vietnamese husband.

Read moreLooking for an authentic Vietnamese restaurant that does classic street food such as broken rice with chicken, pho and more? Then look no further. Com Ga Ba Nga Hoi An is the place for you. There's also curry puffs, snail spring rolls (french influence in Vietnam remember), as well as seafood rolls. So much to delight your taste buds.
The staff are welcoming and friendly. They can easily recommend and describe the dishes to you. The restaurant has a decent amount of seating however it's nowhere near the amount they need for the number of diners politely waiting and queuing up at the door. Patron turnover is fast so you're not often waiting long.
They do take away also.
There's both a Vietnamese and English version of the menu and ordering is by the counter.
The dishes are superb. Tasty, fresh and light, that does not leave you feeling bloated, unless of course you order too much and eat the entire order! You can see your meal being prepared in front of you. The meal preparation area is by the entrance.
There is limited parking along the street at the front though parking can be found a few blocks away or along the side streets.
The atmosphere is lively and pleasant. Worth a visit and the restaurant is great value for the meals they serve.
Whilst they close at 21.00 (9pm) they will still try to make you a meal if they can, if you happen to walk in at that time. How is that for...
Read moreMy friend and I bought two take-away chicken rice meals to try because the restaurant was too crowded, and we were really disappointed with the $25 per meal. Afterwards, I mentioned that we should have tried the restaurant since I had seen many positive reviews of their food on social media. However, I should have listened to my friend's review. When we arrived at the restaurant, it was not crowded, but the staff didn't seem to notice us and didn't provide any guidance. We only saw one menu booklet, so we started choosing our dishes. After making our selections, we were told that some of the dishes we wanted to try were sold out. So, we decided to order the special chicken rice again.
When the food arrived, the presentation was unimpressive, the seasoning was bland, and the accompanying broth seemed like water with added egg. The portion of chicken and food on the plate was no different from the $18 meal. There weren't enough utensils, and the staff was busy elsewhere, so we had to get our own chopsticks and spoons. The restaurant was a bit cramped, the food was very average, and it's safe to say that it was not worth the $25 for the special...
