Kwila is hidden away at the bottom of the hill on Foster Street. If you were unfamiliar with this area you might be like me, heading the wrong way uphill towards Hunt Street, as the bottom part of the street looked like the back of the other buildings. Of course silly me, I should have checked the map.
Kwila is a cute little cafe, probably more suitable for takeaway coffee and sweets. Great if you were a vegan or vegetarian, their simple offerings seemed to be all vegetarian, at least today they were. We turned up at 11:30am based on the great reviews on Google and here.
Their vegan pies and two salads (no meat) on offer today were not ready. We were told a 10 minutes wait for the pumpkin soup and toast. We didn't mind waiting while having our coffee. We were actually after something a little more substantial but that will do for now as we were feeling cold and hungry.
They do have a small table at the back in the corner. Two persons can sit up at the corner wall sides. The rest are a few low wooden cubes along the narrow wall. And two stools at the front window.
The people were friendly, the coffee were great, probably one of the best tasting in Sydney. The homemade pumpkin soup was also tasty, I like the fact that no cream were added. I guess they used spices like cumin and turmeric, there were also roasted pumpkin seeds. It was a great health choice.
I would come again for their coffee and soup if I happened to be around this area but I probably won't make a special...
ย ย ย Read moreFollowing a comprehensive exploration of numerous coffee shops around Sydney, particularly in the Surry Hills area, since moving from Oxford, UK, Kwila is my favourite. That is certainly a compliment as this is an area heavily saturated with very good coffee establishments.
There are numerous reasons for my positive review. Firstly and most importantly the coffee served here is fabulous in aroma and flavour. Additionally, observing, and listening to the owners and their staff, it is clear all share a true passion for what they do. This passion is evident as they research, source, and roast their coffee in-house.
I like the unpretentious, compact, yet warm decor and inviting style evident throughout the cafe. This extends to all the staff. They are friendly, approachable, unassuming and always willing to chat. Being a avid football (soccer) fan itโs been lovely to chat and share my passion with one of the knowledgeable baristas while sipping on a lovely flat white.
