Amazing and very different place in a building not signposted by anything except the liquor license at the front and a singular red light bulb above the door frame coupled with that of a lot of graffiti on the building. Could very easily be walked past by anyone without realising the gem inside. The music, whilst not necessarily to my taste, adds to the whole environment of being an eccentric, metal and rock place with its dimly lit lights, candles, and strange, satanic art on the wall. The bar downstairs when I went on Friday night was very busy and alive and the menu is on the wall. Upstairs is the restaurant area with tables that are candlelit with the menus on the roof. The staff fit the theme of the whole place by being rather blunt and “out there” which some may take as them being rude but I think it’s intentional and really matches the environment and in general the staff did an amazing job. The Mary Burger I got cost $16 and came with fries and is easily one of the nicest burgers I’ve ever had and just tasted amazing and the paddy was juicy and tender. Would highly recommend. Some vegetarian options available but fairly limited in that regard as it’s just a mushroom burger or fries. Definitely a place worth going to at least once if you’re in the area, is very one of a...
Read moreThis is a not to be missed burger joint for any burger lover. It is my number 1 for good reason. Modelled on US fast food with a rock/punk bar setting and style. The venue is quite unique for me. The hospitality always acted in good faith, with speed however, they do become delayed at times when it's crazy busy. Which is typical of Fri-Sun. I just ask for stickers if they are ever late, which they are more than happy to give out. Now the Cheeseburger is as American as Baseball and Apple Pie. From exterior to interior. The sweet, soft wheat based bun is toasted with burger grease with the 60/40 ratio of ketchup to mustard similar to Mcdonalds. Small slice pickles are also added to the mix with diced onion. The 2 slices of American Cheese (freedom cheese), top and bottom act as an insulating blanket of melted delight for the patty. The patty is a slimline higher than average fat ratio, minced Australian Beef. That is cooked to medium and has no raw meat taste, whatsoever. Which always surprises me how they accomplish this. The entire synergy creates the best tasting Cheeseburger for me. The fries are fantastic too, shoe string, salted, potato fries always make you wanting more. I encourage all burger fans to stop in and enjoy this freedom filled...
Read moreFavourite place in Sydney. Been coming back here for years and the quality of the food hasn't changed at all. Can't fix what ain't broken, right?
The atmosphere here is unique and unmatchable. While you can now get your Mary's fix in a few locations across the city, the essential "Mary's" experience can only be fully appreciated right here, where it all began!
Here is my beginners guide to Mary's; Start with a pint of the iconic Slayer juice while you sit back and soak in your surroundings. The cheeseburger is a must. They have a wide selection of burgers to choose from, but their take on a true classic is what really sets Mary's apart from the rest. Mash and gravy for the table. Each burger comes with a side of fries that you can sprinkle with some Tabasco and slide them through the smooth mashed potato and house made gravy. Half Bird for groups of 4 or less, or go the Full Bird to share with larger groups. Freshly crumbed pieces of juicy fried chicken. JFC it's good! If you really want to bloody treat yourself, grab a "Mary's" bloody mary!
I must give a special shout-out to all the staff as well. It genuinely feels like they enjoy being there just as much as the patrons. I can see...
