One of the most interesting dining experience in Sydney, by a mile. You can be assured that you will leave with a story or two to tell afterwards. The venue has been running for over 50 years, and while it certainly isn't to everyones taste (particularly those easily offended...) after an evening here, you can understand why. Possibly some of the best German food we have ever had. Authentic, well portioned and delicious. We opted for the snails, veal topped with lobster and pork knuckle followed by a grappa Affogato and sticky date pudding. We had a lovely french lady (so sorry but I forgot your name!) wait our table. She was fantastic. The second our glasses were empty, she was back to fill them up. Incredibly attentive and knowledgeable on the menu. We took a tour of the wine cellar, boasting thousands of bottles of wine, with another family. Rudi cracked open a 30 year old bottle to share between us all, a beautiful touch and much appreciated. Among many talking points, he shared experiences of Australia in the 70s, highs and lows of the hospitality industry, stories of patrons, wines and beyond. Towards the end of the night, Max who runs the kitchen stayed back with us to share a beer (and a wine!) and exchange stories of decades gone by. He ran through family histories of photos on the walls... his love for food. With enough notice he will make you anything you like, "You want haggis... no problem. Just give me enough notice." With 24 hours, you can even order a suckling pig, which we look forward to trying in due course. Max will go above and beyond to ensure that everyone is catered to. I can't believe after many years of living in the area, that I am only just stumbling across Stuyvesant's House now! We look forward to making our way through the menu and sharing the experience with others.

One of the last, great restaurants with genuine character! We recently had dinner here for my husband’s birthday and had never been before, didn’t know what to expect. There were five of us. We had THE BEST time! Rudi, the owner, welcomed us personally, as if he was welcoming some old friends into his own home. He is warm and funny (brace for a fair bit of swearing, though) and always means well even though we may come across as a bit full-on sometimes. Expect a joke or two, some AMAZING food suggestions, Rudi really knows his wines and he will bring out some delicious pairings to go well with your order. You must try the pork knuckle, the steak Patron, the super tender veal and lobster… the (escargot) snails in garlic butter… OMG, everything was divine! Then we started singing, clapping and laughing our heads off! We will most definitely return, can’t wait! (Expect a full meal and wine to be around $100 per person, but certainly well worth it!) we got a park right out the front, but you could always park at Woollies, literally across the road.

Have been coming here off and on for the past 35 years and simply love it. Not for the socially or politically over-sensitive; those who take themselves far too seriously or for those seeking submissive, disengaged wait staff who are seen but not heard. When in form, Rudi and Max Dietz are wonderfully entertaining, engaging and offer a truely exceptional dining experience. After sucessfully running their iconic establishment for over 50 years, their banter can be confronting to some new patrons - if so, please go elsewhere so those of us who enjoy consistently great food and an outstanding aged wine list and cellar (one of the very best in Sydney - without exception and at great prices) can continue to enjoy this authentic German restaraunt and their banter for years to come.

Summary of review : RACIST COMMENT FROM OWNER in front dining customers, WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE, TACKY decor, FOOD WAS GOOD but definitely overpriced and Dining area is cluttered. Rang up on Valentines day, and asked if bookings were necessary to which he replied with sarcasm. Realising it would be difficult to find a restuarant in the area on V-day I booked a table even after reading all the other negative google reviews. So we later on that day, my date (whom I really liked) and I were seated. About 5-10 minutes later a middle aged lady with a sour face asked ti take our order and I replied we needed more time. She agreed to come back. She never came back or acknowledged us again. I was forced to ask for assistance from another staff member who happened to be good ol' RUDY who was setting up an empty table. By ask, I mean I put up a finger in the air and raised my eyebrows indicating we were ready to order. Rudy seemed to not understand this gesture so I asked across the room if we could order to which he replied: "What? You can't speak english?" Well..order?!" Ironcially I did not get what he said as I couldn't understand his words through his thick German and Bavarian accent. I turned to my date and gave her a confused look as to say 'what is he on about?" At this stage the whole room was looking at us~and I felt her unease and discomfort. not wanting to make a commotion but mainly not knowing what to say to this un-understandabe German, I just waited until he came over as I wasn't about to play his silly games and give in to what he wanted which was for me to basically announce (across the room) what we wanted to eat. He proceeded to take our order and the rest of the night was pleasant although I do not think we received one smile from any of the staff although we had to put up with loud friendly exchanges between a family and Rudy. The evening went by as we laughed at the tacky decor and my date took videos of the room to show her friends how cheesy it was. We also laughed at my goofiness as I knocked over a vase filled with flowers and spilled water over our table and floor. No idea why there was so much water in that vase but my side of the table was drenched. No one came over to help clean or give us extra napkins. Staff just ignored us. Luckily my date was cool and she simply made light of how unco-odinated I was. The table being way too cluttered was my excuse. The reason for this review lies in the fact that I only learned of this racist remark which I thought at the time was a poor attempt at humour a few days ago. Even though we talked almost every day since V-day, I was unsuccessful in securing a followup date. One day I asked her (half jokingly) why we arn't bf-gf yet, she simply told me I was not the type of guy she was looking for. Feeling very confused I asked what happened that night to make her think like that, she proceeded to tell me what was actually said and that she felt so uncomfortable and also the fact that I couldn't stand up for myself or a girl and that we should have walked out. I was shocked firstly at her excuse for judging a person and secondly at the actually comment (in that order). If I had known what was said I would have done more than just walk out. And realising how shallow this girl was to sum up a person's character based on one incident, I decided that she was not the type of girl I would want to be with. This being so, I did really like her and thanks to you RUDY you make me look like a bit of a fool severely reducing my chances with her. Continuing this saga of a story I visited the bathroom at the end of the meal and had to navigate my way though the tables making contact with the diners, again a sign of overcluttered space I noticed the rest of the restaurant was filthy. Only the dining area was acceptably clean however it was way too cluttered, They had this tacky glass see thought book shelf or cabinet with old fashioned porcelain and ceramics. Picture frames which was sprawled through the place were even hung with broken glass?! FYI my...

OMG what a joke. Rude, Obnoxious, Smelly, Bad ownership, poorly decorated, over priced and owner that is unbelievable.

We booked as I wanted to take my German friends to a German restaurant. I had only driven passed a few times but never ventured inside. "I wish I had". On arrival stood at the door waiting for someone to notice me took around 2 minutes. Bu the musty and old attic smell was obvious as soon as we entered. We should have walked away then. We were shown to our table by one of the nice waiters. Then before we knew it the owner Rudi set upon us. Almost insisting what we should order and that what ever we order was good. "Which is fine" But what came next was very inappropriate. Several rude condescending jokes directed towards my friends wife that were so inappropriate it was passed the stage of been funny. Making snide suggestions of her in mini skirts and haired tied into pony tails. sort of thing. Very very seedy old man jokes that made us all feel uncomfortable. We all sort of sat there in shock of his attitude and personality and more amazed that the restaurant was quite full.

We ordered mains but after a few mins the waiter accidentally bought another tables food to us by mistake. Rudi the owner perked up swearing and telling him to F& off and go home if he cant do his job properly and proceeded to ensure that everyone is the restaurant heard him. Very unprofessional way to address anyone even if they are staff. We has some small kids with us so swearing the F word around really didst go down well.

Our mains finally came out huge and big mess of food with no real thought to appearance. Think camping in the country style, which can be nice when done right. Mains were around $38-50 and were quite over priced in my opinion.

So now for the best comment of the night from the owner Rudi.

Mains come out- Rudi comes over with pepper grinder in hand. Owner Rudi- "Would you like a grind with that" My mates wife- No thank you Owner Rudi- Then how about some pepper. "hee hee"

Really inappropriate and uncalled for we were all in shock at his whole attitude and subsequent rude remarks and sexual connotations directed at the females in our group. After around 10 different rude, bad taste jokes. We had enough.

We couldn't get out of there quick enough, we had enough and just wanted to escape this joke of a restaurant.

For the 4 of us with a few drinks total and 2 entrées and 4 mains came to $240. Way over priced for the disgusting food and restaurant. There are wine bottles everywhere that have been opened and drunk but for some reason the owner sticks them everywhere. Walls ceiling tables, shelves you name it. On a side table next to us there was around 12 bottles just sitting there all empty and corked.

How Rudi has managed to stay in business for 40 years is beyond me. I kept thinking he was drunk as this behavior was so out of line it wasn't even close to been funny.

Avoid this place like the plague.. especially if you have females or...

Honestly I was looking forward to eating here because the menu looked great online! It was nice having pretzels at the table, however some were super chewy- until I realised we were charged for them even when we didn’t ask for them? But nonetheless, we are average pretzels.

I had the clam Holland chowder, which was well seasoned, but not so fresh. My friends had sharing plates in which the floor manager kept insisting on, and took the menus before they could even say yes. He nearly counted me before I told him I didn’t want the plate and I would like clam Holland chowder. Portions were big and filling definitely, but quality/freshness again was below average.

There were a few fruit flies that kept hovering around us. A waiter happily replaced my friends wine when it had some sort of particle on the glass. But the floor manager was either super blunt or rude to us about ordering and talking to us in general. He was also very rude to his own waiter/waitress in front of us. They were trying to manoeuvre things on our table to make room for the big dessert plates, but he rolled his eyes and sighed behind us and said ‘come on guys, just put the plates down- so slow’ in annoyance. It was just rude and awkward to hear his frustrations at his employees. So unprofessional.

The waiter/waitress were nice and friendly. Prices are a bit expensive. Especially when it comes to wine. Like $20 for one glass of wine that we didn’t find out until we checked the bill at the end. And I also highly suggest for someone to read over the specials page of the menu to correct the capital words of ‘ASPERGUS’- pretty sure it was supposed to Asparagus, but it can definitely be interpreted very wrong.

Desserts were good! Apple fritters kind of tasted very oily, and the crème brûlée tasted a bit old and like it’s been uncovered in the fridge.

If you’re a wine and German/european food lover, I would recommend to try this place if you’re desperate. The wine selection however is impeccable. But always make sure to stand your ground and always look at...
