This place is the opposite to most, typically you get the venue letting down by the food ....but here the food is great but let down by the venue. If you are going to charge $ 30 mains and $50 bottles of wine then the pub manager needs to pull his finger out.
Guys for that money your competition is the Old Clare Hotel and Central Park's great new eat street....Sydney's newest and hot eat street just across the road on Broadway. YEt this pub deludes itself by poor customer focus...here we are a group of 6 big drinkers settling in for long lunch and a Sunday session in winter....probably all up $750 spend...like every single group from the dining room we head to the bar to settle in for the afternoon....we find the hotel manger running around setting up tables for evening bookings at its not even 2.30 pm whilst every single customer searches unsuccessfully for a seat which are ever decreasing in numbers as they are replaced by the manager with tables that sit empty and forlorn with reservation signs.....and worst still...very person is rugged up with scarfs and jackets shivering and this fool doesn't think to even light the fire, which sits forlorn and cold with the ash from last nights fire.
If I was the chef I would be pissed that the venue badly lets down the very good food. Guys your completion is across the road and booming ..yet you have a chance to compete by differentiating yourself by setting the scene as the cosy English pub with roaring fireplace ..not some cold souless forlorn barn where everything is about the staff's convenience. Mate the place is run down, but could be saved if it had ambience and we would overlook that. But alas no!
Would you believe even as we lunch , in walk a couple of Asian students with McDonald's burgers and they are allowed to sit there eating them..for gods sake. Students aren't your market and that's just crap management.
Needless to say we left and found a great pub up the road with fun crowd, atmosphere and even a band and stayed there for the next 6 hours spending our money having a great time there.
So the lesson is...enjoy the food at the Australian Youth Hotel but don't linger..head up the road to Cowper St and to the Friend in Hand Pub for afters and you wil have a much better experience. Let's hope someone reads this and sets about finding a new bar manager who has his finger on the pulse and more attuned...
Read moreThis place is absolutely fantastic! A pub, restaurant, and beer garden all in one. My wife found it on Trip Advisor during our recent visit to Sydney. We were a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 kids) staying at a hotel nearby. We walked in for a dinner a few minutes after checking in on Friday. The pub was hopping with a great happy hour crowd but I was a little surprised my wife picked it for dinner. We had a quick look around and realized there was a beautiful restaurant if you continued in through the back of the pub. We didn’t have reservations but they were able to get us a table in this amazing little loft/elevated area above the dining room. It’s accessible via a lovely old metal spiral stairs and I bet it would be an amazing place to book for a group celebration dinner, wedding rehearsal dinner or something similar. Anyhow we loved our table up there and our server Pauline was phenomenal. So polite, so pleasant and gave us fantastic service throughout. I know tipping isn’t as big a thing in Australia as it is in the states, but she really made the experience even better, and the kids loved thanking her in French. The meals were delicious, the prices for the food and wine were very reasonable for the quality, and the service was wonderful. We saw a beer garden on the way out and exited through the still busy bar with all the staff saying bye or have a good night on the way out. It seems likes it’s just a really well run place with great food and invested staff who seem to like working there. If it was in our neighborhood at home we’d definitely be regulars. We even broke our cardinal rule with short visits by returning to the same place on Monday. It’s not like there’s a shortage of restaurants in Sydney but the kids wanted to go back, there were still loads of things on the menu we wanted to try, and our 6 year old had learned a little more French for Pauline! Haha. Different night so different server but the young man who took care of us this time was great too, and my steak was fantastic. We never tested his...
Read moreI was pretty excited to try this place with my friends but I am so disappointed how one of the staff treated us. All we wanted was to hang out in a nice place, have some drinks first and have food later. We started having some beers. One of my friends ordered burger and the other friend and I was only interested in sharing fries while we had our drinks. Despite of telling that staff that we just want to start with something light and eat dinner later, He not once but 3 TIMES said " JUST FRIES! " I wish I had asked his name. he made a face and was surprised that we only wanted to order fries as if we had committed a crime. Never once I have experienced such judgement from a staff for ordering something that we WANNA eat and are PAYING for!. Last time I checked there is literally no law on what we are allowed or not allowed to order. I usually have huge respect for people in customer service but I just couldn't resist writing this review as he brought down the whole vibe of the place for us and I don't think I would ever recommend or visit this place again. Could you please train your staff on how to quietly take orders without passing comments or making faces on our order? As paying customers, we are ALLOWED to order whatever the heck we want to eat and whenever we want to eat. Mind you I did end up ordering burger for myself later as I had initially intended too but still we were treated as if we were there for free. If his behaviour was intentional then 0 stars for this place but if it was unintentional then please train your staff some...
