I had a fantastic lunch here in the downstairs dining area with my family. The staff were attentive, the atmosphere felt like a friendly neighbourhood eatery and the food was exceptional. My partner is gluten intolerant and EVERYTHING on the menu was gluten free. For the rest of us, who can eat gluten, we didn't miss it at all. It made for such a lovely dining experience because my partner didn't have to worry at all about her dietary requirements. The food was well presented, delicious and service was relatively fast. We had the 3 cheese arancini, haloumi, pork belly, sauteed greens, beef cheek, gnocchi, fried chicken, passionfruit Eton mess and the peanut parfait to share. It was the perfect amount of food for the four of us. Our favourites were the haloumi, beef cheek and gnocchi but in all honesty, it was all very very good. We all have a sweet tooth and the desserts were the highlight! Whether you are gluten intolerant or not, eat here! It's good.

My husband is coeliac so we were pretty happy to stumble upon a wholly gluten free restaurant! Finally somewhere where we didn't have to ask a million questions before deciding to dine! The venue is moody and trendy and the staff were lovely. We ordered the Pork Belly bites, the fried chicken, the saganaki and fries. The food came out quick. The portions are quite small, but given the venue was a bit fancy, we weren't surprised. The Pork Belly bites were yum, we just needed more! The fried chicken was good, it was tender. But nothing special I guess. The Saganaki was quite disappointing sadly. When I think of saganaki it's cheese with heaps of oozy yummy sweet sauce on it, but this "blueberry compote" was just blueberries on top. Again, quite small portion size so was a bit sad. So we give it 4 stars because the venue and vibe was nice, and kudos for being wholly gluten free, there needs to be more of this!

We had high hopes for our dining experience here, as they are the only certified gluten free restaurant in Geelong. Although it wasn't bad, it also wasn't great either. Initial impressions were that the staff were friendly and the decor gave the place a nice vibe. If you don't like noisy places this may not be for you (it is also a bar so no surprise). There was a reasonable range of food options with choices for carnivores, vegos and vegans. We got arancini balls, gnocchi and fried polenta. The share plates were small and on the more expensive side. With that in mind we were expecting something pretty amazing. The arancini balls and fried polenta were both ok, tasty but nothing special. The gnocchi which was almost $40 was pretty poor. The gnocchi itself was like it was store bought, the pesto and the cheese was average. On top of that it was served warm. Pretty disappointed! Not sure we'll go again

Fantastic food, great looking venue loved it and will go back for sure!!!.

My next comments are certainly shared to help this venue really succeed because the food, ambience and service is deserving of that success. So I'm certainly not pointing out these improvements ( only my opinion of course) to criticise but as constructive feedback.

Point 1 of feedback - I've always wondered why when you receive tasting plates of food and there is say two of you dining and you receive three of that food item and not 4. Does it not make sense to serve 2 each? Why should one person miss out or cut the third in half to share it? Arancini balls in this case cost nothing to make. serve everyone equal serving and you eliminate a potential negative.

Point 2 of feedback. I would also like to suggest that the sit down tables between the upright tables are too small to be comfortable even as two people dining. There is no way you can fit the various dishes as well as plates, cutlery, water bottle, two drinks, a phone and keys my wife's purse without worrying about knocking something off the table.

There was only two chairs which is fine but that meant everything we couldn't fit on the table had to go on the floor.

All such an easy fix. If two or four or how ever many people are dining they each receive the same level or serving. FIXED.

Install slightly larger square table or better still a rectangular table making this space even more comfortable.

I can highly recommend this venue if you haven't experienced it. We'll...

This review is a couple years old so probably time to updated it. Updated review I still absolutely love this place. Service is wonderful, very personal and they always have a lovely smile on their faces. You can tell they love working there. The food continues to be the standout. Yes it is all gluten free, but you would never know, it is all very delicious. Super fast too, not sure if maybe what we ordered was already made or the kitchen was quiet or if we were just having too much of a good time and we didn't realise how long it had been, but it felt like we had just ordered and the food was there. It is still just as busy as always, well it was a Saturday night, so not too sure what it is like on weekdays, but if you are wanting to go I would jump online and book, although they say they do take walk ins, but I'd hate to get there, ready to enjoy a great night only to be told they have no room. Also booking is easy, it's all done online on there calendar, instantly. Anyway, we have been many times in the past and I can't see any reason why we will stop going there in the future while they continue...

My partner and I went to dinner at Recess Bar + Eats to celebrate my birthday. My partner has a mix of food intolerances, and we were able to order food straight from the menu that catered for his dietary requirements. We shared these dishes and were thrilled at the food! The service was amazing, our waitress was tentative and friendly and ensured we always had drink, even extra napkins for the messy ribs we ordered.

Now, I forgot my purse on the floor that night, and didn’t realised until Monday morning. I was panicked knowing that the restaurant was closed Monday and Tuesday. I sent a facebook message and within the hour, they replied and told me that because we lived in the same area, it would be dropped off the next day for me. This kindness floored me, it’s so rare for someone to go out of their way to help someone.

I could not recommend this restaurant/ bar more. They are reasonably priced, their food and service was amazing, and they are thoughtful and kind to their local community. Thank-you Recess for the amazing...
