The Other Place @ Rutherglen — Restaurant in Victoria

After being told our breakfast would take 45 minutes, we accepted the wait time and waited patiently. My breakfast arrived an hour later. Other patrons around us were being seated and served before us, but the rest of my table were still not served. After about 10 mins I asked where the other meals were and the owner said their meals were not coming out b/c we didn't book and we were not a priority!! (We actually tried to call previous day to book and nobody answered or no message service either). He then said that the rest of my party ordered after me, I corrected him and said they ordered b4 me. He then rudely asked where I was from and proceeded to tell me in a condescending manner that I was NOW in regional Victoria and its hard to get staff and that's why they we're having trouble getting the meals out, yet others, seated after us were being served. He was belittling us b/c we were tourists! Really? We've been coming to Rutherglen/Corowa twice a year for 40 years! (Actually some of our party had previously lived and worked in the region). We're always supporting the small businesses in the area. He should be ashamed of the way he treated us, like we we're tourists with no understanding of the country. All he had to say was sorry for the delay, I'll check where your meals are, instead he made us feel so insignificant and not important b/c we were 'visitors' to the area. The other ladies at the table were so shacken up by his confrontational reaction they were unable to eat their breakfast when it finally arrived. Shame on you! We've since heard from local friends that they are trying to sell the business - hopefully the new owners will have more respect for customers who are supporting local...

I went in there today and missed a handwritten sign on a whiteboard on the ground by the gate I had two kids and a pram, and when we missed the sign and entered the courtyard we were spoken to very rudely. My friend offered to leave but we were told we could stay. Whilst sitting in the courtyard looking at the menu there were two other groups that entered through the (almost empty) courtyard. There was a list of rules on the table that made me feel uncomfortable. After we were spoken to rudely we decided to leave without ordering. I will never go back to the other place or recommend it to any friends when there are so many other lovely businesses in Rutherglen that have wonderful customer service and delicious food.

Reply: You are right I didn't see the interaction that happened inside the shop, that is why I only commented on my own experience. My experience was not pleasant, I saw you being rude before we even sat down, you were the one that started the negative interaction, it was intimating and uncomfortable. After reading the reviews I believe this is not an isolated incident. If I was spoken to the way you spoke to my friend I would have been in tears, I thought you must have been mates and you were having joking banter until I saw how uncomfortable you made my friend. There is nothing worse than being intimidated and singled out by a bully that is what I got from the first two minutes of being in your business. I'm sorry if you don't like my review but I am posting my experience and it was a negative one.

Our delicious tasting food was ruined by the man who questioned us about our order. We ordered a side of peanut butter with the granola, which is standard at most cafes we eat at in Sydney - so to us this seemed like a normal request. We also asked to replace the chicken with tomato in one of the lunch options, as I am a vegetarian and do not eat chicken. Again this seemed like a simple request. The order was put through so we decided to wait outside for our food before heading to our table. We were approached by the owner who made some very rude comments about what we had ordered. He said he would do the changes for us this time but don’t come back and ask to change anything again. He explained he usually has a sign up saying no changes are to be made, and that is fair enough. However the comments that were made were not acceptable and did not make us feel welcome at all. Despite this, we decided to go back the next morning for take away as we truly did enjoy the food. After we had left, I opened the bag of food and there was two extra meals inside that both had chicken. I then realised I was charged extra. I was going to go back and explain I did not order two extra meals, however I was too embarrassed and did not want to get yelled at like the day before.
