Located just near the Luna shopping centre in Scarborough, and a stone’s throw from Scarborough Beach, Knead Bread and Coffee is a funky and modern cafĆ©-bakery with lots to offer. It’s recognisable by the mural featuring large sunflowers and the words ā€œIt’s Gonna be Okayā€, as well as the large ā€˜Knead’ logo in grey and white lettering. I dropped by there one Friday morning after my swim. Open daily from 5.30 am to 2 pm, Knead Bread and Coffee is clearly popular. I say this because when I got there, there was a line of people out the door waiting to order. Always a good sign. The staff are friendly, easy going and efficient, so you won’t have to line up for long – which is great. Along with a variety of sourdough bread loaves and a great selection of coffees, the venue offers an array of cold-pressed juices. They also serve up a host of sweet and savoury treats, including chocolate chip cookies, fruit toast, vegemite scrolls, and a selection of bagels. They do some unique items too, like the jalapeno & smoked cheddar scone. And for those wanting something more traditional, there’s the classic ham and cheese croissant. The dĆ©cor of the place is very cool, with grey concrete floors and a light wooden faƧade below the front counter, with walls painted charcoal. These features give the venue a kind of raw, industrial vibe that works like a charm. Add the lightness of the bread loaves and the light-coloured wooden shelves they’re stacked on behind the counter, and you have a nice colour contrast that works well. I also like that their coffee menu is hand-written on a black board. It’s these sorts of features that gives the place so much character - it’s rustic but at the same time modern. Inside, there are easily accessible shelves stocked with coffee making equipment you can purchase, along with Knead Bread and Coffee branded mugs and bags of coffee beans. Add to that a display of books on bread, with titles including ā€˜Flour Lab’ and ā€˜The Sourdough School', and you end up with an eclectic and lively, yet chilled atmosphere. Oh, and they play great tunes too. I wasn’t sure what song was playing when I was there, but it matched the vibe of the place perfectly - upbeat and fun. You can also buy cold brew coffee straight from the fridge. On top of that, they sell Reuben sandwiches, ham and cheese toasties, and butter. Oh, and did I mention the icy pole freezer with a wide array of icy poles? šŸ˜‰ I’m happy to say these icy poles are made in WA and are 100% natural. The toasted coconut and watermelon flavours looked good to me. Definitely a good option for those hot summer days Perth puts on. On my visit, I opted for my go to coffee – an extra hot flat white – and, since I’d been to the pool, an almond croissant. The coffee was fresh, smooth and tasty and the almond croissant was delicious, a good size and perfectly complemented my coffee. I really took time to savour it, and it kept me going until lunchtime! Along with a couple of tables inside, there are plenty of seats outside, with round wooden tables to boot. Plus, you have the option to sit on stools at a bench that overlooks the on-site bakery/kitchen – very cool. There’s even a sign on the bottom of the window that overlooks the bakery that says ā€˜Please don’t tap the window it scares the Bakers’. I really like this style of humour – it’s unique and helps to distinguish the venue from more conventional places. Knead Bread and Coffee also sells its own branded shirts and hats, which is a nice touch that adds character and makes it more than just a coffee shop-bakery. By chance, I happened to meet the owner, Robbie. He’s easy going and clearly loves what he does, which is so nice to see. Overall, Knead Bread and Coffee is a great venue that has something for everyone. If you’re in Scarborough, make sure to check it out. And if you’re not in Scarborough, head down to check it out anyway. It’s a great spot to sit and watch the world go by.

I got two sourdough bread, one baguette and one pretzel (=Brezel). I am no expert in baguette, so I won't rate this. However, we surely know what Brezel and bread should taste like since we are from Bavaria. The kids love Brezeln. They have to be fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside. Unfortunately, that was not the case. It was rather dry and no real taste to it: 3/5 for trying;) The bread is great compared to what you can get at woolies &co. I prefer 100% rye, which I used to bake myself, but this is not available. It's still good and I would rate it 4/5, but Laib bakery bread is superior. If you want to try a real Brezel definitely check Laib bakery, too. Also, when I asked for ingridients inquiring for the bread with the most rye, the girl behind the counter did not really seem to know. She was friendly, though. Thanks for some good bread, we have missed it on our travels ā¤ļø. Thenomad.family

What an awkward change. This used to be one of my favourite cafes to go to because the baristas actually cared about the coffee. You had choices of single origins from decent roasters (with medium to light roasted beans) in either a pour over or espresso style. Went there today and pour overs were off the menu, the bakery side has expanded dramatically and we did have some tasty bagels. However the coffee was just the boring cheap bean choice hidden by a darker roast (from Micrology). The espresso was no longer interesting and the mocha was no longer creamy or rich as it once was. The atmosphere was a bit off putting just loud shouting and overly loud pop music. Out front it smells of urine. There must have been a huge change in ownership as the cafe has gone from speciality to generic and no longer one that our family looks forward to.

Delicious bagels and bread but staff do not care about hygiene: Ordered a few delicious bagels at bakery, but after 5 minutes of waiting I noticed that the girl who was preparing our bagels was too busy with filling and emptying the bins. When she walked back to the kitchen to grab our toasted bagels, I had to ask if she could please first wash her hands before touching our bagels, she replied that she was using a thong to grab them … apparently, she never heard of contamination as everything she just touched in the kitchen is contaminated. When we were sitting outside consuming our bagels, the beardy guy from behind the counter was chasing us away as he needed to bring in the tables and chairs as it was 13:30 and so ā€˜almost’ closure time. When doing this I noticed hygiene was also not a main priority for him as tables were cleaned by just brushing of the breadcrumbs with his hands and were put inside. A second confirmation for me that next time I will get my lunch somewhere else. I don’t understand why businesses are always marketing their business in every possible way (social media), but on the back side don’t care about consumer experience and what happens on the back end, a real pity as the bagels were...

Pretty average experience. I’ve been a couple times but cannot understand its highly rated reputation.

Bread & coffee is incredible, Pain au chocolat, was okay didn’t have the super flakiness to it like it has done in the past. Asked for a ham, cheese & tomato toastie but apparently they only have ham & cheese toasties only or cheese & tomato slice toastie (Was it so hard to add a couple slices of Tom. When you have the sandwich bar in front of you) however toastie was pretty good.

The staff were very occupied on speaking with each other or local customers rather than serving the other customers, some convo seems a bit inappropriate. And finally which I was mostly baffled when I seen staff handling food without gloves, especially when they handle tills and touch their hair. I myself work in hospo and just found customer service and the food handling didn’t seem a priority in this place, which is sad considering social media seems to hype up the...
