Amigos has been an institution in Wollongong for as long as I can remember. Situated on the fast evolving foodie golden mile on Wollongong’s Kiera Street the sprawling Mexican style restaurant is popular with the younger demographic.
Offering specials on Taco Tuesdays and Wing Wednesday’s these nights usually attract a bigger crowd so expect to find uni students and teenage birthday groups dominating the crowd.
The ambiance of the venue is pleasant. There is a the usual cantina paraphernalia smattered throughout but it’s the layout that is slightly unusual. The dining areas wind through several rooms and then out to a rear alfresco area. The layout is not unpleasant and actually adds a feeling of privacy and seclusion.
Staff are friendly and somewhat attentive. Made up of younger staff who are probably learning the ropes in their first hospitality jobs they do their best to make your night enjoyable.
There is an extensive drinks menu but for some reason the bar was not able to put together a Bloody Mary which I found slightly odd but the alternative Pimm’s Punch (El Presidente) was shared and enjoyed between three us us while others in our group downed frozen margaritas.
The food here is not authentic Mexican but that doesn’t mean it isn’t enjoyable. Like most off shore Mexican the proteins all tend to taste kind of samey and the difference in the meals just comes down to what it is served in. One small observation from my meal was the flour tortilla basket which had been deep fried to achieve its shape tasted like the oil was overdue for a change. Not a deal breaker but I’m guessing the result of a faster food style operation in the kitchen.
One thing with Amigos is that the meal servings are huge! No one at our table was able to conquer their meals (kids included) and we left with three take away containers for tomorrow’s lunch!
The service is also very fast. We received all our meals about 10min after ordering. It actually felt faster, which is great for large groups. In saying that we didn’t feel like we were being hurried through our sitting and had ample time to enjoy our meals.
Overall Amigos is great for groups and you will not...
Read moreAmigos was once a favourite of mine, however after my most recent experience I can confidently say I won't be returning to the restaurant. After being seated at what is best described as a half table, my daughter and I asked the wait staff to move us to a larger table. Given that the restaurant was half full we didn't think this would be a problem. After waiting for 10 minutes the wait staff returned and proceeded to sit us near the outdoor toilet (aka portaloo!). As soon as we were seated we were overwhelmed by a smell of sewerage. What was most concerning was the fact the waitstaff confirmed that she could also smell sewerage but proceeded to want to take our order. Shocked and certainly not thinking about food we asked to move again. Now comfortably sitting at our third table for the evening we ordered a cocktail jug, a starter, an entree each and a main meal. Within 5 minutes all our food came out together minus our starter and drinks. While I should be feeling somewhat impressed by the quick service, I was soon disappointed by the quality of the food, IT WAS COLD! Again I raised my concerns with the waitstaff, who appeared confused and unable to give us any reasonable explanation. At this point our cocktail jug arrived and the waitstaff took our mains back to the kitchen. We decided to eat our cold empanada, drink our cocktail (with its lumpy frozen strawberries) and leave as soon as possible. In total we were in the restaurant for 40 minutes! Given this restaurant had been a favourite of mine in the past I decided to give some feedback to the manager on duty. What a big fat waste of time that was, not even an apology, instead I was given the bill and asked how I would like to pay!! Amigos to say I am disappointed is an understatement, your inability to serve up the basics (drink first, followed by starter, entree then main meal) is simply a reflection of your lack of focus to customer service. For a restaurant who charges up to $39 a meal its simply unacceptable. As for the poor quality of food and the strong smell of sewerage wafting through the restaurant, I think the combination of sewerage and cold food speaks for...
Read moreTerrible Experience: Avoid this caterer for Events I regret sharing an overwhelmingly disappointing experience with Amigos. The owner, Owen, demonstrated a complete lack of accountability and professionalism.I am writing to express my deep dissatisfaction with the catering service provided by Owen during a recent event. The experience fell far short of our expectations and had several issues. Disregard for Dietary Restrictions: Despite clear instructions(on the phone during the booking process), beef was served. This blatant disregard for dietary preferences is unacceptable and deeply disappointing due to religious preferences Completely unaware of the package details, a 2-course meal was served instead of a 3-course agreement. There was a lack of communication with the team, and sadly, the team was not informed about the details. It took multiple follow-ups with OWEN to obtain the necessary information, reflecting poorly on the overall service experience.Owen not only refused to take accountability for these failures but also displayed rudeness towards my planner.Shockingly, he did not bother to call back to address the issues or offer any form of resolution. I strongly advise against choosing Amigos for any events. Such a lack of accountability and customer service is unacceptable, and potential clients should be aware of the risks associated with engaging this catering service.I sincerely hope this review serves as a cautionary note to others seeking reliable and professional catering services for...
