It was a morning like any other. Late February, cool though promising late summer heat, sapphire blue sky with only a few cotton whisp clouds floating high in the stratosphere. I was in Wollongong, a city by any measure but by no means a vast urban jungle. A seemingly young city, not by it's founding date but by the awkward adolescence it bares and the hint that one day, perhaps soon, it would bloom into something more beautiful or something more sophisticated or simply something more. I found myself on Victoria street and in need of sustenance. A mural depicting a bull and a bear caught my eye then moments later the aroma of roasted and freshly brewed coffee caught my nose. As I entered the establishment I was greeted by spacious and airy surrounds and two young women wearing genuine smiles behind the counter. One young woman showed me to a table, gave me a menu and some table water which to my surprise was ice cold. After studying the menu briefly I decided on a long black and a bacon and egg roll, nay make that a double bacon and egg roll. As I waited, pondering over the fact that my roll was very cheap and therefore would either have to be very small or of low quality, I looked up at the brick feature wall and the wrought iron look railing at the front of the cafe and thought it tied in nicely with the surrounding area where so much construction work was going on. After no time at all my coffee and roll arrived, the coffee was delicious but the roll was something else. My friends there was a very generous amount of bacon and the bacon was extra crispy and I didn't even have to ask for extra crispy bacon, it had barbeque sauce, which in my opinion is naturally the superior sauce option plus it had a slice of cheese... To be honest I was dubious about the cheese at first but the first bite told me it was a good choice. I thoroughly enjoyed every bite and I would venture to say it was the best bacon and egg roll I have had in...
Read moreWe read good things about this cafe/ tapas bar and decided to head there for a lazy Sunday lunch.
We arrived without a booking which for lunch is completely acceptable. We had no trouble getting a table and a very friendly waiter showed us to a table inside. There was a lot of people dining when we were there and the hard polished concrete floors meant that the volume got close to excessive a number of times. As far as ambiance goes the modern industrial decor is pleasant but the noise was a bit bothersome.
The menu is extensive and includes Spanish, Mexican and more traditional cafe/ bistro fare. We ordered three mains from the lunch cafe menu and a round of drinks.
The food was well prepared with fresh and flavourful ingredients. The serving sizes were adequate but a side of fries with a burger or a small salad with the mixed grill would have improved the value and enjoyment of the meal.
Overall what we had was good but not excellent. I would love to come back and try some dishes from the tapas selection as I think this is what this venue is known for.
In conclusion... I’ll be back to see what more this funky venue...
Read moreCame for Father’s Day lunch with 10 people. Two share platters were ordered, and 4 menu items were ordered. The meat balls and muscles although ordered first were the last items served to our group, over an hour after ordering. The share platters were served as seperate items for the first 3 courses, with the last course crammed onto one board with no one bothering to inform us until we inquire where the other platter was. The staff were overwhelmed by the amount of business they had on this day, when you could actually get a staff member to talk to about an issue. Before the muscles were ordered we inquired if there was chilli in the dish and were assured there was not, however when served the chilli were easily seen, and the heat although mild was still an issue for our family member who has a dietary issue. The meatballs were greasy, lacking in flavour, the sauce was watery, with flavours found in most microwave meatball dishes. Despite how late our food has been delivered we were hurried from our table for the next seating at 230, when the last meal was...
