Rudest service I've had the displeasure of experiencing in Austria (not just Graz)! We were a walk-in group of 6 and a toddler, and the front desk happily accommodated us. That is where the "happily" stopped.
Wrong drinks, wrong food, missing cutlery, poor service, curt responses... I don't believe that the customer is always right, but we were treated as less-than-human at this establishment.
A waiter identifying himself as 'Anton' (I believe he offered a fake name, as he was clearly aware of his poor service) gave us 30 seconds before demanding orders. We rushed some drink orders out (which he impatiently took and got wrong) and asked for 10 mins to look at the food menu. He came back 3 mins later for food orders. And got those wrong (all ordered in German). The service was miserable, bordering on racism at times - never in my life have I seen such stark treatment between the Austrians at the tables next door, versus our group of German-speaking 'foreigners'.
Instead, our table received curt responses, the wrong food, paltry service, a lack of cutlery, a series of rushed and rude orders, no please or thank you (in either German or English). The food was okay. No goulash, though it wouldn't have killed the waiter to tell us before ordering! Suffice it to say that no gratuity, service or tip was offered on this occasion, and I'd not eat here again if I were paid to do...
Read moreVisited in May 2024. A cozy place loved both by locals and tourists. The interiors are nice, I absolutely loved the forged lamps with colored glass. Kind of sets the right atmosphere. I ordered pumpkin soup (4.9€), tea (2.6€) and Kaiserschmarrn (10.9€). The prices were great! Even after the slight increase in prices in 2025, the prices stay one of the most affordable restaurants in the city. And taking into account the quality of the food, the value for money is really good. Unfortunately, I forgot to ask to bring the tea with the dessert, so It was served first. The pumpkin soup came pretty fast, and it was the creamiest, silkiest, tastiest pumpkin soup I ever had! The spices were complimenting the vegetables, the cream and pumpkin seed oil were a great addition, the croutons were crunchy. When I finished the soup, the Kaiserschmarrn was served, and it was HUGE. I would recommend ordering it when you're not alone, it's almost impossible to finish it all alone. In Herzl they serve Kaiserschmarrn with plum compote, and it's a wonderful combination of sweet and sour flavors. The dough was airy, fluffy and tasty, the strawberries were delicious and added freshness to the dessert, I wish there were more! This was the best meal I had during the three days spent in Graz, thank you,...
Read moreWe went there for lunch twice. It was a bit light & shadow.
The first time, service was friendly and quick and the food good (I had the chanterelle goulash). The second time, the service was poor, we had to wait 10 minutes until we could order drinks and it took them another 25 minutes until the ordered drinks arrived. The food was pretty good again, though. (Beef goulash with dumpling, slices of pork roast and a blood sausage on cabbage) and a Kaiserschmarren. The latter was a bit weird because it contained some semolina. This helps the consistency but we didn't like chewing on these grains. Otherwise the taste was very good.
Except for being slow, the staff was friendly and upon complaining, they gave us our drinks for free to make up for the hassle.
The location is situated in the heart of the old town of Graz, so there are no parking options for obvious reasons. There are a few tables outside in front of the entrance and there's a terrace with tables in the backyard as well. As it was already a bit cold, we were also provided with blankets against cool legs.
Overall, I can recommend this address if you want to eat typical Styrian cuisine in...
