Bacówka -- Berghütte — Restaurant in Vienna

What a special place. It feels like you enter a different (and delicious) world. It was a bit surreal, it looks similar to a mountain hut 🛖 but Polish style in the middle of a city. When we went there, we were the only customers which was a bit strange (we actually thought it was closed because it looked a bit dark) but the lady in front of the place turned out to be a waitress and persuaded us to go inside. The service wasn't the nicest to be honest, a bit snappy, but the interior and the food made up for it. We spent ages in front of the fireplace soaking up the warm, we checked out the parrot (yes, there is a parrot) and finished off the experience with surprisingly really delicious Bacowka pirogy. Recommended. Only...

I'm guessing this is not a restaurant for tourists...no English menu, no allergens list, no English speaking owners (I think they're the ones by their attitude). The soups we had were ok, not bad but nothing special...probably good if you were polish, reminding you of home. Dumplings quite ok. Unfortunately, the service was below par. After so many years here, close to schoenbrunn palace, you'd think they would go "the extra mile" and hire someone to translate the menu in English, because they refuse to speak it. Only cash, no card. The old man's attitude removed 2* from this review. He'd better stay only in the kitchen. The lady's...

hier kocht der chef noch selbst - und das schwerst lecker und mit leidenschaft (das merkt man nicht nur am essen, sondern auch daran, dass man ihn aus der küche pfeifen und singen hört). von außen war ich eher skeptisch, das lokal sah eher aus als wäre es schon länger geschlossen, aber wenn man reingeht erwartet einen ein liebevoll gestaltetes, bäuerlich anmutendes vollholz wohnzimmer (ich liebe den geruch von holz). der chef hat uns auch gleich den kamin eingeheizt und die speisekarte erklärt (anfangs war er ein klein wenig schroff anmutend oder einfach nur müde, aber ist schnell aufgetaut und war sehr nett). ich muss ehrlich sagen, ich hätte mir die gute qualität des essens echt nicht erwartet, es war alles superlecker (und riesige portionen), die kartoffelkekse waren fluffig, der spieß saftig - und das bier floss natürlich dann auch dementsprechend :-) man sollte eventuell ein wenig mehr zeit einplanen, gute hausmannskost braucht zeit, aber das ist es wert! apropos wert, hier gilt: nur bares ist wahres, keine...
