During a recent trip to Vienna, I had the opportunity of trying out Berliner Doner on two separate occasions. The first time my family and I were wandering around Vienna’s 7th district - and in the mood for a snack - decided to try out Berliner Doner. I tried both the sandwich and durum wrap, pairing them with a coke and opting for all the fillings. The doners were ready before we had the chance to finish paying, and we grabbed a seat nearby to dig in.
I wouldn’t consider myself a doner expert, but Berliner Doner’s version was without doubt the best I’ve had. The bread in the sandwich version was crisp on the outside but with a pillowy middle, and the ratio of fresh vegetables to meat and sauce was delightful. A yogurt and spicy sauce added freshness and heat, and the meat, lightly spiced, was tasty and fatty enough to pair well with all the other ingredients.
The second occasion followed a night spent at cafes and bars in Vienna and my brother and I found the idea of a doner highly desirable. Deciding to not waste any time looking for a new place to go, we opted to revisit Berliner Doner, excited to discover if our slight inebriation would contribute to the experience. Arriving past midnight there was a steady stream of people eating doners, and we opted for the same order as our initial visit, complete with a side of fries. Once again the doner was excellent, fresh, spicy and with a myriad of textures. Fries were also good, accentuated by the addition of the doner sauces, and it was hard to think of a better meal given the setting.
Overall, whilst I may not have sampled all of Vienna doners for a comprehensive opinion on the city’s best - I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Berliner Doner as a...
Read moreWe were sadly on our last day in Vienna when we finally got around to pay Berliner a visit, but if we ever visit the city again, I'll do my best to eat here again.
We were lucky to arrive just before 13:00, when the place was completely free of customers, and the tables (3-4 of them maybe?) were also free. Just after we ordered, a 4-5 people queue formed, and then the tables started to get occupied. We suspect that quite a few employees/locals from the area come to buy their meals here, so there may be some rush hours during the day.
The Durum, which I ordered, (chicken and lamb I believe), 3.80 Euro, was great. Tasty, big, juicy, fresh; overall different and way better than what I'm used to in Romania. The flatbread was, without a doubt, the best I ever had, probably because it was much fresher than the prepackaged ones.
My wife had some pasta, can't remember which kind, and she really loved it. For our little daughter we got a schnitzel with fries. She's six, and she's not adventurous food-wise. It was good too. We got two Diet Cokes as well (1.8 euro/piece if I recall correctly). The total came to about 15.80. Now, that's wonderful value for...
Read moreI visited this restaurant with 4 of my friends, when we entered they sat us down immediately. We looked at the menu for around 15 minutes before anyone came over to the table. We even looked a waitress directly in the eyes she started walking over then swerved to another table, we had to ask the waiter to come over before we could order. They also did not appreciate when my friend asked if they had halal food more than once as he did not hear the reply the first time. The food was acceptable but nothing special and one of our party ordered a curry wurst but it had no curry of any kind just chips and sausage. We then payed the bill and they kept giving us dirty looks as we didn't leave immediately, two of our party went to use the toilet and the rest of us waited with their bags they then kept looking at us with disgust. It felt like a very hostile environment and me and my friends felt uncomfortable the whole time. All in all the food was very standard and the service was...
