Highly, highly recommend this restaurant. It's cheaper and less busy than many of the more popular places. Get the deer goulash if it's available. Easy to make a reservation on their website. We ate here twice for dinner during our 5-day trip to Vienna. Both times we made a reservation in advance on their website, which I would very strongly recommend doing for any restaurant in Vienna. This restaurant thankfully though has the benefit of not being crazy busy/crowded or long queues because it's a little bit further away from the main city center attractions (but still very easily accessible with public transport and/or walking). First visit: we both had the original (veal) Wiener Schnitzel with Erdäpfelsalat (potato salad) and lingonberries (Preiselbeeren), €22. There was also a special that night that we ordered to share - deer goulash with warm red cabbage and a dumpling. We were expecting a much smaller dish, but it was a good thing we were hungry, not having eaten much earlier in the day due to traveling. The schnitzel was good of course, but the deer goulash was the absolute best dish we had the entire time we were in Vienna. The cabbage served with the goulash was also delicious, and we kept looking for it on menus at other restaurants during our visit. If this dish is available when you visit this restaurant, definitely get it! Second visit: we were hoping the deer goulash and warm red cabbage would be available again. It was good enough that we talked about it multiple times during the several days between our two visits. However, our 2nd visit was on NYE so there was a limited menu and this dish wasn't offered (like I said, order it if you get the chance because there may not be a second opportunity!). So instead we ordered the pork schnitzel (Schweinsschnitzel, comes with potato salad & lingonberries) and traditional Viennese beef goulash (Wiener Rindsgulasch) which comes with a bread dumpling and pickle. Then for dessert we shared one order of Kaiserschmarrn which comes with plum jam. A few pieces were bordering on burnt on one side, but it was only a few pieces, and there's enough powdered sugar and plum jam that it wasn't an issue. Again the schnitzel was good, as was the beef goulash (although more fatty than the deer), but the deer goulash was still our top favorite - not just at this restaurant but overall out of everything we had in Vienna. We also had Wieselburger beers during both visits, which was the most local beer according to our first waiter (Wieselburg is in Lower Austria and a little over 100 km east of Vienna), €4,80 for 500 ml. There was no English menu during our first visit because I think they were still working on it, but this was not a problem for us, as we know a little German. They had completed the English translation of the menu by the time of our second visit anyway. And the waiter was more than willing to explain things if we had questions. The service was very good, and both of our waiters were friendly. They came by our table with just the right frequency - we never had to wait too long to order something or to pay. Unlike many of the other restaurants we visited in Vienna, the waiters also did not explicitly ask us for a tip when we were paying. We tipped anyway of course because the service and food were both great, and both were very surprised and thankful. Neubauschnecke is cheaper than many more popular restaurants in Vienna! * Pork schnitzel - €14 here w/ potato salad incl. or €15 total w/ lingonberries vs. €19,90 at the more popular Figlmüller at Wollzeile where potato salad is an additional €6,80 & lingonberry is €2,80 (grand total of €29,50). So the same dish is half the cost at Neubauschnecke and in our opinion just as good.

After being denied service at two places due to having no reservations, we ended up at Neubauschenke — and it turned out to be the best decision of the night. The staff was incredibly kind and welcoming, and the food was absolutely fantastic, full of flavor and soul. They didn’t just serve us a meal, they made us feel at home. When they found out we were visiting, they even took the time to recommend places to see around Vienna. That kind of hospitality stays with you. Highly recommend this place, both for the food and the heart behind it.

Just don’t… tourist trap.

Keep in mind, there were only two groups ordering. This happened at 15:00 on a Saturday.

After waiting an hour the waiter was surprised to know that we haven’t received our order yet. After another half an hour we asked again… So around 1 hour and 40 minutes we got our order… or half of it. We didn’t even get the soups. The waiter wanted to force some schnaps on us, that we refused. Was not easy to make him understand that we just don’t want to drink spirits.

At the time of paying the waiter still didn’t know that he hasn’t served us the soups.

It seemed like the waiter was on sth… I wish him...

30 minutes before we got served and another hour before we got any food. My partner ordered salmon and I'd ordered rib eye steak, medium rare. 30 minutes after we'd ordered the waiter came over and said there was no salmon do you want zander. No apology just there's no salmon, have this instead. Then when the food came my steak was well done so we sent it back. After another half an hour the waiter came back and just said, she's not making any more steak. That's it! No apology, no offer of anything else, just she's not doing steak. Really the worst restaurant experience...
