I tend to be cautious when it comes to 100 percent gluten free restaurants, because while it means I can safely eat there while having Celiac, it also means I worry that it will be a "healthy" restaurant. Where the usage of "gluten free" is in the same category as "Paleo" or "keto", a new dietary trend that often makes food which is both expensive and unappealing to actually consume. This is not that. I drank a Gluten Free Rhubarb Shandy and ate the Pork Schnitzel, as they had run out of veal, and there was a moment where I was tempted to simply cry because "it just tastes like delicious food". Breading that was crunchy, not soggy on the bottom, flavorful, and stuck to the meat even when cut, a feat of gluten free engineering only possible in Austria presumably. A gluten free beer without a unpleasant bitter aftertaste and an actual head when pouring? Incredible. Beyond this, I did not pay an exorbitant price for a meal which I can assure you would cost at least 40 dollars in the US, which I payed around 25€ for. There is a level of baseline disappointment you have with Celiac, that when you eat at such a restaurant you will go "oh, this isn't actually schnitzel but it's pretty good for what it is" Again, this is not that. Your schnitzel will be delicious, your potato salad will be delicious, your sauerkraut will be delicious, and your beer will be delicious. I only wish I had eaten the strudel too, but, alas I did not. Please for the love of die glutenfrei Gött...
Read moreFood was okay but that’s the end of it. We were scammed tonight.
We arrived at 9pm, feeling pretty confident we were going to be able to have a nice dinner here since they close at 11pm (or so we thought). When we asked to be seated, a waiter rudely told us that the kitchen was closed, but another waiter came and said that he could sit us but we could only order the snichtzel. We were thankful and sat down; but quickly realized that this didn’t feel right, so we researched the prices online (because they didn’t give us the food menu) and found out that the snichtzel was one of the most expensive items on the menu. This in itself it’s not a problem, but it felt like a trick to make us believe that we could only order that item, when in reality if the kitchen was closed, it’d be closed. Then the vibes were completely off and wrong the entire night, it felt like they wanted us to eat super fast and leave, but I repeat, the restaurant closed at ELEVEN pm. Finally we eat the food which was okay I guess and ask for the check, and they simply showed us the amount, not even the bill was brought over for us to check. (We had found out the amounts online and had previously guessed how much it’d be and the check fit our prediction, if not, we would’ve asked for the printed bill).
All in all a horrendous experience and a sad one at that being celiac, because there aren’t many places in Vienna were you can eat gluten free food and if one them is this one, we’d be better...
Read moreBeware of aggressive and threatening waiter!
When me and my friend went here, we were very excited to go to a completely gluten free restaurant, but sadly it turned out be a very scary and stressful experience.
The food was okay and the service by the waiter was decent, up until we asked for the bill. Instead of providing us with a receipt, he just showed us the the amount we owed on his phone immediately and said in an aggressive tone “service is not included”. Then he stayed and loomed over our table as he stared at us while we counted the money. He kept repeating “service is not included” and when we were still counting interrupted us and said it wasn’t enough. As he had been friendly enough up until this point, we were shocked. At all other restaurants, they leave you to count the money and decide what you want to tip in peace, and I’ve never experienced someone trying to intimidate and pressure you into giving them money like this.
After this unprofessional and intimidating behavior we refused to tip him anything, we gave him what we owed which he angrily took and stormed off. He never gave us a receipt, so we weren’t even sure the amount we paid was accurate.
Luckily, Vienna has many different gluten free friendly cafes so I would recommend to visit them instead and stay away...
