While on our honeymoon in Austria, my husband found this place as we were looking for lunch nearby. We walked in and were immediately seated in the small and somewhat empty restaurant. We ordered the breaded mushrooms and special of the day - cabbage and sausage. Everything tasted great and we had a lovely time, up until the bill came.
My husband had pointed to the small (10,50) on the menu when he ordered, but the check rang up for the large (13,50). He simply informed the waiter that he intended to order the small, had pointed to it when ordering, and asked if the bill could be adjusted; he didn’t finish the dish as it was in fact too large - had he finished it, we would’ve ignored the charge.
The waiter handled the situation very poorly, saying that he assumed we wanted the large. He was curt, and then threw the menu he was holding aggressively onto a nearby table. Tone is one thing, but I have NEVER once seen a waiter act out aggressively like this!! He stormed off and we were left sitting for a while, assuming the bill was being adjusted.
A second waiter (possibly manager?) came by and we explained the situation. He chuckled and said “well it’s too late” and prodded my husband to insert his credit card. At this point, I didnt even care about the 3 euros, I was more disappointed in the customer service this restaurant is operating on; no apology for the misunderstanding, no discussion, and definitely no adjusted receipt (which is not impossible) - just pure dismissal.
We ended up paying the extra money because the situation was so gross we wanted to run out. Shame on you for treating customers this way while representing a restaurant with a...

Nestled in a quiet street in the heart of Vienna, Ilona Stüberl is a charming and authentic Hungarian restaurant that feels like stepping into a cozy family dining room. It’s the perfect spot for those craving hearty, flavorful dishes with a warm and inviting atmosphere. Our recent visit was a delightful experience, highlighted by a selection of their traditional dishes.
The Gulas Soup was a comforting start to our meal. Served steaming hot, it featured tender chunks of beef, perfectly cooked potatoes, and a rich, paprika-infused broth.
The Gulas experience continued for the main dish. The beef was melt-in-your-mouth tender, simmered to perfection in a deeply flavorful sauce. y fan of Hungarian cuisine. The liver dish was another standout. It featured a generous portion of tender liver, sautéed with onions to bring out its natural sweetness. Saving the best for last, the Ilona Platschinkle was the highlight of the meal. Topped with a dusting of powdered sugar and served warm, it was the perfect way to round off our dining experience.

Read moreDuring our long weekend visit to Vienna I think that we can confidently say that our evening meal experience here was the best. We arrived without a reservation and one of the friendly waiters showed us to the only free two person table outside. Perfect.
I had a chilled glass of draft beer (Austrian Zipfer) & my wife had a fruit juice. Then we both went for the Hungarian goulasch - on the menu it was "Rindsgulasch mit Tarhonya - (ungarisches Gulasch mit Teigreis)" - an egg based noodle. I had the large portion - my wife the smaller one. It was excellent. I ate this accompanied by a nice glass of full bodied Hungarian red wine as recommended by the waiter.
My wife had a dessert - the Ilona-Palatschinke - a sort of filled marmalade pancake. She wanted to try a sweeter wine with this and are same, helpful waiter brought a bottle of Hungarian Tokaji Aszu, to our table, filled her glass and then left it there for her to sample. She was delighted with it.
What made this place special for us was the combination of excellent food and service. We had a final bill of ca. 65€ which we thought was great! We can certainly...
