This place was very happening, even on a Wednesday night. Reservation is highly recommended, although we were able to snag a same-day reservation. Our experience started a bit choppy - upon arrival, there was no hostess to check you in. The place was very disorganized, which is ironic for a society that follows strict orders. Although we had a reservation, we had difficulty flagging anyone down to check-in for a table. Once we got seated, the service did become much better. The restaurant offered both tasting menus (72.50 euros and 98.50 euros) and a la carte. Since we weren’t too hungry, we decided to order from the menu. For appetizers, we both enjoyed the intense beef soup and the ham dish. The presentation on the ham was outstanding. Both dishes were delicious but met expectations (I guess it is hard to surprise our palates given we are from NYC). For entrees, we went with the most traditional Viennese dishes - schnitzel and beef goulash. I didn’t have a very good experience with goulash when I visited Prague a while back. The goulash here, while it didn’t change my mind much, was better than the experience I had in Prague. But okay to skip unless you are a big goulash fan. The veal schnitzel was surprisingly light and flavorful. The portions were huge tho, so it can easily be shared by 2. The sommelier helped pick out wines that paired well with our dishes. At the end of the meal, our bill was 120 euros with two appetizers, two entrees, and four glasses of wine (plus the cover charge of 4.5 euros each). From the pricing standpoint, this was definitively a great experience. But did the food here blow my mind? Certainly not…

This is a legendary Viennese corner, that attracts celebrities and tourists as well as clients that have been visiting for decades. Founded several centuries ago, it keeps with tradition with excellent cuisine, their famous open-faced sandwiches, a large array of patisserie (petit fours, puddings and cakes) and a large wines and cocktails menu. Another section of the shop is dedicated to the deli section where you can buy all kinds of delicious specialties from Austria, as well as exquisite and refined chocolates in their traditional boxes featuring a black camel. Service is absolutely flawless and you can rely on the front desk staff (identifiable by a camel pin) to solve any problems you may encounter. They are also proficient in English, and will take care of you with the refrained courtesy to be expected from Vienna's servers. For a buzzing place, the service is also incredibly fast! Choose your own little sandwiches and sweets at the "Vitrine" and bring them with you to the table for a seamless experience. The server will probably be ready with your drink when you come back. Also, heated open space outside, if you like people watching in one of the most chic-est streets of Vienna, and you can also smoke your cigars there. All in all a wonderful experience, and reasonably priced. A glass of bubbly with 3 little sandwiches will run about $14.50. Which is totally worth it for the show alone.

First meal in Vienna. Went for dinner at around 6:30pm on a Thursday evening. I ordered the buffalo mozzarella rocket salad and the veal goulash. The food was decent, but not amazing. Albeit I may not have ordered their best dishes. My experience was tainted as It was very difficult to get the waiters’ attention to order, even the Austrian couple next to me had noticed my difficulty. One of the waiters in my section had passed my table 7-8 times. By the 8th pass, I gave him a big wave and asked if I could order. While walking past he raised his voice and said “I will take your order later”. As the restaurant was busy it would have been understandable, had he not served other tables who had arrived much later than me and took time to chat to the other diners and pour them drinks. Finally after 25 minutes a waitress took my order and was kind enough to check up on me when the food was slow to arrive. Coming from Australia, you definitely don’t tip if service is bad or mediocre and I did not realise tipping was a given here. When I chose not to tip, the waitress’ attitude soured. She gave me a dirty look and didn’t respond when I said “thank you very much”. I know for next time to always tip. :|

Please do not eat here as the wait staff are racist. I (person of color) went with my friend (white) for breakfast, about 45 minutes after opening. As with any European restaurant that offers outdoor seating, we asked if we could sit anywhere, in which we were told yes. After sitting, we waited for about 8 minutes and were not provided menus. The restaurant was not busy when we arrived, since it was so early. There were about 3 other tables already there. My friend got up to grab a menu. We noticed that people who arrived after us were seated and provided menus. About a minute after grabbing the menu, the waiter came by to ask her if we needed a second menu. When we were ready to order, I waived at the guy who was standing next to our table and can see us clearly, and we were ignored. Again, other tables who had arrived after us were seated, provided menus, and had their orders taken. We left after 15 minutes of waiting. After reading other 1 and 2 star reviews, there are other people with similar experiences.

Notice that the restaurant is not disagreeing with any of the reviews. Typically, restaurants can comment on reviews, apologizing and saying that they will utilize the feedback for future improvement. There is not one comment from the restaurant for this purpose.

If this does not persuade you to not eat here, then consider that the prices might be very expensive for a basket of bread. There are other places in the area, Cafe Mozart, Segafredo, etc, with significantly better prices and just as delicious (not that we would know what the food here tastes like as we were never served).

If you are still reading and thinking this is about money, we walked in with Louis Vuitton bags after making a purchase. This store is located next to several luxury and designer stores, with in a maximum of a 2 minute walk. So clearly this has nothing to do with the appearance of customers who may or may not have money.

There might be another particular word to describe the wait staff, but that is not appropriate to be used in a review forum.

I suggest eating literally anywhere else, as this seems to be the only restaurant in the heart of Vienna, surrounded by a significant amount of tourism, that offered...
