We visited the restaurant for dinner on 27 December 2024, drawn by the unique concept of Mari's Metcha Market. The live music performance was spectacular and added a wonderful touch to the atmosphere. However, while the food was acceptable, on par with what you might find at Japanese food chains rather than Japanese restaurants in Japan, the service we received, particularly from one male waiter, led to this 1-star review.
First, from the start, his demeanor was cold and unwelcoming, a stark contrast to the Omotenashi spirit that defines Japanese hospitality.
Second, when we ordered meal sets without drinks, intending to request a cocktail and matcha latte afterward with dessert, the waiter responded with a dismissive "Just water?" and an unfriendly look, which felt unnecessary and unprofessional.
Third, we ordered two meal sets, but they did not arrive together. The second set was served significantly later, by which time the first had already gone cold. Basic service etiquette would ensure both meals are served at the same time.
Fourth, when the second meal set was finally brought to our table, the waiter was also carrying another order. Instead of placing the dishes down properly, he asked one of us to take it directly by hand, which felt extremely inappropriate.
Lastly, even as we left the restaurant, the same male waiter continued to maintain an unfriendly demeanor, which left a lingering sense of discomfort.
Hoping for a more enjoyable experience, we left promptly after finishing our meal and decided to dine again at another Japanese restaurant we had visited the day before. The difference in food quality and service was clear (restaurant name not disclosed out of respect for competitive fairness).
It is important to note that, earlier that day, we visited another branch of this restaurant (Mari's Metcha Matcha) for afternoon tea and encountered a similar lack of warmth from the staff. This points to a larger issue with training and customer service across the brand.
Having lived in Japan and visited numerous Japanese-owned restaurants across Europe, I am familiar with the level of service expected. I sincerely hope the owner addresses these issues, as the concept has great potential, but service gaps like these risk overshadowing the...
Read more5/5 in all categories. The food was amazing. So authentic and so delicious. The interior was extremely well thought out and the whole spaces was truly beautiful. The staff was very kind and helpful. They helped us with charging our phone.
In terms of food we ordered japanese tapas as a starter which was so tasty. For mains a flounder with sides. The fish was so well seasoned and so delicate. A masterpiece. We also got onigiri, which were very good. The matcha as well was very tasty and served in a bowl which added to the charm of the lunch. For dessert we had dango, it was good but for me personally too warm which made it too mushy and sticky, but that is my personal...
Read moreThis is a phenomenal restaurant. Everything is so well thought out - the interior design is cozy, heartwarming and intimate, the lighting is perfect, there are shelves of Japanese art or items which can be purchased. The food is incredible and the menu is also quite extensive, so there's a lot of range to pick from! The best part is however the service. Absolutely lovely. The staff was so kind, patient, professional, warm and friendly. It felt almost surreal to get this level of service in Vienna. I wish only the best for the owners and staff, they have done a wonderful job with this place! Easily my new favorite food...
