I had lunch recently at Restaurant Sokače, a cozy Serbian eatery tucked away in Vienna’s 15th district, not far from Schönbrunn. From the moment I walked in, it felt inviting — the warm lighting, wooden interior, and familiar Balkan atmosphere gave it the feel of a home-style tavern.
I visited during the weekday lunch buffet and was impressed by the variety: stuffed cabbage rolls, roasted potatoes, bean stew, cevapcici, grilled chicken, and fresh salads. The food was rich, hearty, and tasted just like something made in a family kitchen. My favorite was the charcoal-grilled meats — juicy, smoky, and deeply flavorful.
The buffet was well-priced, around €12, and included a generous plate with plenty of variety. The portions were large, and everything was replenished regularly. Even though the place was busy, the staff remained friendly and attentive throughout the visit.
There’s a small terrace out front for outdoor dining in the warmer months, and the inside space is relaxed, perfect for both families and solo guests.
If you’re in Vienna and want authentic Serbian food served with heart, Sokače is a great place to stop. I’ll be back soon to try their full à la carte grill menu in...
Read moreService was okay. Kind of pushy.
Four servers were on a smoke break, and they all ignored me multiple times as I tried to get the check. One of them knew for sure we were done with our meal because he had brought us a to-go box and we had stacked all our dishes.
The food was okay. Mostly under seasoned. Ingredients were not particularly fresh. The corn bread was particularly bad. This is such an easy dish to prepare well, it was a bit sad to have an enormous, dense, dry hockey puck of it. A whole ice cream scoop of butter they added on top wouldn't help it.
I liked that a live band appeared to be practicing in one of the rooms later in the evening. Earlier in the evening, they were blaring fairly loud music so we decided to sit outside.
I've been in Europe for four weeks now, and this was the first place that pressured me to add a tip, even though I didn't want to because of the poor service.
I wouldn't recommend this spot,...
Read moreAbsolutely loved this place. The food was a great mystery for first since I've never eaten Serbian food before, but the waiterr recommended good options and what size for two people. The sallad was fresh and had somekind of feta cheese type of roast on it. It was excellent and wpuld definately reconmend to taste that. The grill plate we took was 1kg for 2 persions. It was a litlle more than enough but it's always better that way and the variable of differwnt meats were awesome. We ate at the terrace and altough there were big wedding parties inside or at least I think there was, the service wast still very agile. If you are hungry after Schönbrunn visit, take just a few hundred meter walk to...
