The following statements , however I do my best to keep my neutrality , may be biased as I was rejected membership. I started working in Bahrain in August 2018 , I try to take care of myself , so I was interested in using its gym , and paid a visit , and I did not like the gym very much , it can be considered as rudimentary by a lot of standards . A good friend of mine, who is an American, applied and became a member immediately. After 6 months, I decided to apply for membership. Why ? Because i wanted to work out with my buddy. He is a serious gym-goer. it is always great to work out with a friend , many would agree. After officious demand of documents , i got everything ready then I applied. To my disappointment, soon afterwards, I got the letter saying that I was denied membership. And the letter was the stupidest I have seen in a long time , arguing that they give priority to small nations who do not have their own clubs. I want to clarify one thing : I hold nothing against the British people, I believe in brotherhood / sisterhood of humanity. An institution can opt to have racist policies, the worst , though is a racist institution with a liberal facade. In my workplace, people who do the same job as me, are members of this club , they are Canadians and, Americans. If you dont want certain people in your club , just stop beating around the bush, and be direct. That's my only...
Read moreGood facilities: pool, gym, tennis courts. Hit or miss food. For example, ribs may be great one weekend but next weekend less so. Ample fish and chips portion for the money but too greasy and the batter way too infused with a taste of egg yolk, which (hint) can at least be partially offset by a copious amount of lemon juice. Opening up the Ruby Murray, onsite İndian restaurant, was a big mistake and, in the end, had to close and, even after Covid, was not viable to reopen. Looking forward to a new restaurant with a British/European menu. (The old Ascot from years back used to have great weekly special meals priced reasonably .. and who could forget the dessert cart navigated to your table by Annie?) Raising the entrance price to BD2.500 for guests was an unwelcome surprise. İ would urge the Club to have 2-tier pricing with a much lower entrance fee for off-peak time visitors. Regrettable that the Club intends to close the Library. İn the end, however, it is meritorious that the Club managed to survive financial trauma keenly exacerbated by Covid -- although many of the long-standing wait-staff (remember Amina from Ethiopia and Um from Myanimar?) lost their jobs for good. However, the new team of wait-staff from Africa (Cameroon and Kenya) and Philippines are friendly, attentive and caring...
Read moreI've been a member for a few years now. Food is British and some other good food too. Great fish and chips and other specials. Chef can cook. Cheaper drinks and food than anywhere else. Little bit old and tattered, needs a little facelift with flooring and some tables and chairs, but okay. Nice friendly vibe. Many people are expat British but a mix of Western nationalities, really friendly local and Saudi Arabic people who fit in really well and all people are inclusive at this club.
Service can be a bit hit and miss, sometimes quite slow when they aren't even busy. I understand if it is busy, but sometimes the waiters are talking to each other instead of checking on customers and you have to flag them down, which can be annoying especially when you have told them several times to please pay attention to the customers and don't leave them for ages. The Club has a lot of variety in entertainment and members are open and welcoming here. They have different rooms for smokers non-smoking bar and nice nocks around the place. Good pool for laps, lots of gym type activities. Good place to meet other expats. Definitely suggest getting a membership. Good value for the money, especially since if you join this club you can pay a short entrance fee to the Rugby Club...
