Bardin — Restaurant in Antwerp

I visited Bardin in Antwerp for a quick lunch with a friend. The place itself looks nice and cosy, and there’s a cute little backyard which is a plus. It’s easily reachable by tram, though parking nearby is a bit tricky if you’re coming by car.

Unfortunately, the experience didn’t quite meet expectations. The first thing I noticed upon walking in was an unpleasant smell coming from the toilet area, which was quite off-putting while I was waiting for my friend.

We ordered a homemade lemonade and a tea — the lemonade was actually very good. For lunch, we both went for the Thai salad. It was a bit strange to find mushrooms in it, and the taste didn’t really work well with the rest of the salad. It also seemed like the salad came from a prepackaged mix — we even had a few soggy, dark leaves that clearly shouldn’t have been served.

On the bright side, the beef in the salad was cooked nicely, but the sauce was way too sour for my taste. Portion size was okay, but nothing impressive.

Een gezellige stek voor een verfijnde lunch, uitgebaat door sympathieke dames die het beste voorhebben met hun klanten. Het terras geeft uit op een mooie stadstuin met een grote boom, waar we helaas wegens plaatsgebrek geen plekje vonden, maar ook binnen was het gezellig. De drukte van de Mechelsesteenweg valt er zelfs helemaal niet op.

Verscheurd door twijfel tussen de verschillende gezonde lunchopties vroeg ik de dienster naar een suggestie. Zij vermeldde dat de mensen bleven terugkomen voor de Thai Beef salad, welke ik dan ook bestelde. Helaas kwam enkele minuten later het bericht uit de keuken dat deze niet meer beschikbaar was, waarop ik de salade met quinoa, kip, mozzarella, avocado en mango nam. De rijkelijke portie was meer dan voldoende, en was vergezeld van diverse slasoorten en een frisse dressing. Jammer dat ik niet meteen mozzarella terugvond in de salade, ook die zal op geweest zijn. Ook de avocado was redelijk onzorgvuldig gesneden, waardoor er stukken van zeer verschillende groottes op het bord lagen.
