Disappointingly, I can only give this one star simply down to how we were treated. I will explain that.

We sat down and ordered 2 beers. The pleasant member of staff duly brought our beers which we enjoyed. We perused the menu and noticed on their website that it said 'cash only' so we wanted to check with the staff if that was still the case as we saw a card machine and people on an adjacent table paying by card. We waited until the member of staff asked us what we would like next, and this was a different member of staff. We asked if we could pay with a card he said yes and thought we wanted to pay now. We explained we didn't want to pay now, we were just asking to know if we could pay with a card. He said we could pay with a card. We then placed our order for the next drinks. He then said that it was a shift change and therefore we needed to pay him for these drinks, and pay his colleague for the previous drinks. We thought this strange but we said this was fine. He brought our beers over and we paid for them, although nobody else was paying for each drink- we couldn't help people watching to notice this, and this isn't Belgian culture. We then saw the previous member of staff a while later (hold on, we thought it was a shift change so surely he would be gone by now?) do flagged him down to pay him, which we duly did. A while later after we finished our beers, we headed out and said goodbye to both members of staff who were both still working (hold on, I thought there was a shift change so why was the first still there - hmmmm?????). We walked out the door and the second member of staff chased after us and hassled me about paying for drinks. I told him we had paid (as instructed). He was very agitated but then dashed back in the bar probably to check if we did.

Nobody else (i.e. the local Belgians) were being asked to pay for each drink, so why were we? The nonsense about needing to pay as it was a 'shift change' was clearly a lie as both staff were still there and still clearly working when we left some time after him making thet claim.

I can only assume that they have had problems with English people not paying before so he treated us badly because of it.

if that is the case, that was racist. Racist towards English. Racism is treating others differently because of their race. This was that.

If you're English, avoid this racist bar.

1 star. I would give 0 if I could.

This was a huge disappointment for us. We have been looking forward to coming to Belgium for a few years now, we had a trip to Bruges booked but lockdown cancelled it and not been able to rearrange another trip until now. We researched bars and decided to come to Gent partly because of the range of good bars here, and this bar was one we identified as a must go to place. Shame. We won't be going back. They probably won't care. That...

We went here twice in two days, but the second time was really upsetting. The place was less busy than the first time we came, but the table service guy, short dark hair with blue eyes, was the most obnoxious waiter ever!!! Honestly fire him, no way to treat customers this way. I was eager to order a second round, wait a while but none was coming to the room where we were sitting. I decided to go order at the bar and I was rudely dismissed, saying someone was gonna come to the table. Went back to the table and again waited like forever, after waiting pointlessly I went back to the main room and tried to get a hold of the waiter that was serving tables, again he told me he was gonna come to the tables and to go back to my seat. Some moments after he comes to the room I was sitting in and he says it was too overwhelming for him and he was gonna close the bills and not arcing the room anymore (hello drama queen! It was not as busy as the day before honestly). We decided we were gonna pay and leave as we had spent the last hour waiting for someone to come at the table. As we went to the bar to pay, the waiter that was serving the tables, got annoyed that we wanted to pay directly at the bar rather than at the table waiting for him. In his anger spread, unjustified, he even suggested he was gonna give us the most expensive bill to pay. Very unprofessional. Eventually, keeping cold blood, and repeating we were gonna pay and that was it, as we just wanted to leave, at that point, we managed to pay our own bill, in the midst of a lot of swearing from the waiter, extremely unprofessional again, and we just left. I never experienced such a bad and disrespectful service. 0 out 5, and this is all linked to one actual waiter: short, dark hair, bright eyes, mean...

Nothing special except the insanely long list of beers they have in stock. If you're a beer tourist or some kind of connoisseur, I can understand coming here. But I was offered no advice, simply given the list of beers and had to choose one blindly. I ordered a beer and asked for a glass of water, which was apparently an otherworldly request-denied. The guy had zero personality and clearly no concept of tipping in other cultures (or just doesn't want to make money). As an American, I would have left him 20%, which is my standard at a bar. But due to the experience he got nothing. Say all you want about how this isn't America and that I should respect the local culture-true to an extent, but it's the service industry. Customers go to have a positive experience. If the server had any clue what he was doing he'd have faked a smile, offered a word of advice and given me a sip of tap water knowing the chances of a tip are higher with Americans. It's also cash only. And the kicker-the place was completely dead. You can get amazing beer everywhere in Belgium. Will not be back, and I don't recommend it to...

Dulle Griet is one of the most iconic beer spots in Ghent, and an absolute must-visit for Belgian beer lovers. The selection is fantastic, with an impressive variety of local brews that showcase the best of Belgium’s beer culture. Pairing a cold pint with their pâté and cheese platter makes for the perfect experience. One of the highlights — and what makes this bar truly unforgettable — is their quirky tradition: if you order the famous “Max” beer (served in an enormous boot-shaped glass), you must hand over one of your shoes as a deposit. They hang it from the ceiling in a basket until you finish your drink. It’s both hilarious and charming, adding to the fun atmosphere and making the whole place feel lively and unique. The ambiance is rustic, cozy, and buzzing with energy, filled with locals and visitors alike enjoying good food, good drinks, and a truly Belgian sense of humor. If you’re in Ghent, Dulle Griet is not just a bar, it’s an experience — come for the beer, stay for the tradition, and leave with great memories (and hopefully both of your shoes!).

I was in Ghent on a day bus tour, and we had a free hour before we left, and This is one of the places i went. -I came here for the shoe in exchange for beer tradition. -It was very busy, the inside was full, and you can only get the large 1 yard of beer inside, not on the pattio outside. -There was a line out the door, and i waited in line for maybe 10-15 min. -eventually i was seated, i was solo, so they added me to a large round table half full of people (4 out of 8), and they were a friendly group from amsterdam. -Soon after i ordered the yard of beer, they came pretty fast with it, and asked for a shoe in exchange. - I chugged the beer in 3 gulps. It was a little different drinking from that large glass, as the beer doesnt flow consistently from the shape. -Then i paid and left drunk and happy -The service was great, it was very busy, and they were running around helping everyone, but always had a smile on their face. I would love to come back here and get a booth in the back area

We came all the way from Australia, eager to experience Belgian culture and chose this place based on the many positive reviews. What a huge mistake. From the moment we walked in, we were treated dismissive. We waited over an hour to be served while others who arrived after us were attended to right away. When we finally tried to ask for help, the staff, especially one particular waiter, were incredibly rude, dismissive, and downright intolerant. This wasn’t just bad service, it felt personal. We felt unwelcome, disrespected, and yes, discriminated against. As visitors excited to explore the culture, this was deeply hurtful and completely unacceptable. I would strongly warn others, especially international tourists to stay away from this place. It was one of the most unpleasant experiences we’ve had while traveling. Shame on them.
