Extremely Disappointing Experience This museum used to be a wonderful and accurate remembrance of life in Flanders around the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. It beautifully illustrated the hardships of our grandparents, cultural anthropology, and Flemish folklore – an ideal complement to a visit to the city of Ghent.

Unfortunately, under the new direction of Ann van Nieuwenhuysse, the museum has lost its essence. It has been transformed into a random collection of retro objects and pictures from the 1970s and 1980s. Instead of showcasing the evolution of Flemish life, it now feels like a nostalgic display of the director’s own youth – some items on display are still in use in my own home!

Even the guides, when I spoke with them, could not hide their disappointment and preferred not to comment on the new management’s choices. My Australian guests left frustrated, calling it a waste of €9.

There is plenty of space to show the transition from 150 years ago to modern times, but this new radical setup no longer reflects the history of Ghent or the Flemish folklore it once celebrated.

Een leuk museum, een tijdmachine. Je komt binnen via een poort op het binnenplein. Alsof je door een tekening van Anton Pieck rond loopt. Links is de receptie/kassa, en verder op de wc-groep. Voor je het museum-cafe. De voorstellingen: Vast, De bijzondere momenten van het leven, gevlochten in de bijzondere momenten in het jaar. Kortgezegd, een moment in het jaar, en een moment in je leven komen samen in een ruimte. Tijdelijk: de jaren 90. Doelgroep: Van 18 jaar en ouder. Een ieder die 20 of ouder was in 90, een o-ja ervaring. Van simpele dingen zoals speelgoed, tot vakantie. Deze tijd herbeleven. Voor de jongeren: Ok, niet mijn ding. Effe appen dat mijn ouders niet konden appen. Kortom, de herkenbaarheid van het dagelijkse leven, dat maakt het zo leuk. In uitgestalde voorwerpen, videos, geluid en foto's . En soms kan je het zelf eens proberen, zoals SMS-en in grootmoeders tijd. Ik heb het zelf niet gedaan, maar getoonde videos kunnen ook op je mobiel worden bekeken, via een QR-code link. (In 1990 wist men niets van QR dinges) Receptie: Heeft een onbewaakte garderobe, en kluisjes zodat je met je handen vrij kan lopen. De route: Er is 1 route, van kamer naar kamer. Met diverse goed te nemen trappen in de route. De twee voorstellingen zijn in twee verschillende delen van het gebouw. Honden: zou het niet doen. Als ze al niet geweigerd worden. Maar daarna vragen mag altijd. Parkeren, het museum heeft geen eigen parkeerplaats/terrein. Er zijn openbare parkeergarages in de buurt. Cafe: Er zijn warme en koude dranken. En er is een kleine keuze aan verpakt snoepgoed. Taal: Frans, Nederlands en Engels. Een leuk, vermakelijk museum, dat eindigt op het pleintje, in de warme zon, met iets te drinken.
