Amazing Belgian restaurant near the canals in Ghent!
I ordered the Flemish stew and it came with salad and fries to share (along with a mayo dip). The meat was soooo tender and the sauce was rich and flavourful (you can really taste the beer). Despite only having four pieces of meat, I was surprised to find myself full after eating two! The fries were crispy and not greasy - truly delicious Belgian fries. The server informed us that if we ever wanted more fries then we could just ask - I was so happy to hear this. Before our mains, we were given a basket of sourdough bread and olives. Tasty with olive oil. After the bread, they brought a bowl of vegetable soup. It was a thin stock-like soup. Light and heartwarming. Then after our mains, we were given the choice of tea or coffee. My friend ordered the coffee whereas I got tea. My friend said it was the best coffee they've had in Ghent. Now I wish I ordered the coffee ahaha. In total, my meal was €18.90 as a lunch time special deal. I must say that it is absolutely worth it for the quantity and quality of the food. I should also mention that the service we had that day was exceptional! Very friendly servers, ready to help and always smiling.
I recommend this place to anyone looking to having a filling lunch that's under...
Read moreI'm extremely surprised at good reviews this restaurant has got. The presentation and decor is all fine and impressive, and it seems like a popular place due to their location and some websites suggesting them, but the reality I observed was that the food quality is shockingly below average. I will not be surprised if someone finds out that the gravy in their Flemish stew is from powder and the beef was fast cooked in an oven instead of being slow cooked as advertised. It seems to me they are cutting some corners at their kitchen to cater high customer demand. The fries were oily and soggy, which is an embarrassment for any Belgian fries. Walk a bit further and you'll get a better fries with one tenth of price. The shrimps were not fresh at all, and non-freshness was masked with a lot of lemon and garlic. It might be a place for some drinks, but once you know a restaurant / bar is cutting corners to make higher margins, I would not trust them with my food. Do yourself a favor and for your own health, avoid...
Read moreThis cozy restaurant is located a stone's throw from the Leie in the heart of Ghent.
When I arrived here, I was warmly welcomed by an employee who immediately took me to my reserved seat.
once seated, I ordered my aperitif, a white martini, and it was brought to the table within 5 mins.
After going through the menu, I had made my choice, as a starter I had chosen the grilled courgette ricotta with capers. Highly recommended! the combination of the flavors that come together in the mouth with every bite were very fantastic.
Once the starter was finished, 8-10 minutes later I got my main course, the grilled tuna steak with béarnaise and seasonal vegetables. Where there was a complete palette of flavors in the starter, I missed this with the main course. The tuna was quite bland and the seasonal vegetables were nothing to write home about. The bearnaise, on the other hand, was very tasty.
Conclusion: definitely recommended if you visit Ghent and are looking for a cozy, affordable...
